How useful was prismatic in our understanding of the solar system?

How many planets were discovered through the use of binoculars? Could the man have reached the moon in 1969 without them?

N planets were discovered with binoculars. They are not important in space travel.

Choosing a good pair of binoculars

Binoculars Binoculars are like two telescopes alias pointing to the same area. It is easy to perceive depth, since it has two lenses and not just one, as a monocular.

The binoculars have been around since about the 17th century after telescopes were invented. People used to mount two telescopes side by side and looked through them with both eyes.

Between 1850-1890s, a kind of prism binocular invented that allowed greater depth perception, allowing the eye pieces to be spaced wider apart. These binoculars allow further expansion.

The most affordable binoculars are porro prisms enabling brighter images and are precision instruments. These binoculars are larger and sometimes you have to re-aligned.

One type of binocular prism faces of the prism binocular. This binocular is smaller and narrower, but loses some luster. The good to think about them is that they usually never have to be re-aligned. They are also much lighter. Optical coating corrects this problem. So they are coated binoculars many roof prism.

Optical Coating is a great feature that helps make a brighter image, reducing the amount of light reflected. Light reflected inside the glass blurs the image.

General Binoculars focus by moving a rotating wheel that focuses on both telescopes simultaneously. More Use binoculars sophisticated independent approach which means that each side of the binocular needs to be adjusted individually.

Some binoculars have The image stabilization technology to curb sudden movements. In general, it can be enabled or disabled by the user. This means that very high-powered binoculars can be handy when you normally could not. The image quality is not always so good for binoculars stabilized and are generally more expensive.

Coin-operated Binoculars are very popular at many tourist attractions. They allow a more detailed view. These are always mounted on a pedestal and can be high power.

Military binoculars are usually hand with an increase of 5x and 7x. Military Binoculars are more robust and resistant than regular binoculars and independent use deals, because it is stronger than the central focus. Most military binoculars also have special features that help you work when is wet or to block the laser beams. Sea Binoculars are designed to be easier on the eyes due to sea rocking back and forth.

Astronomical Binoculars allow people to see some elements of the sky from afar. Many moons and planets can be seen with binoculars. Pluto, Eris and Uranus all can be seen more easily by using binoculars. Some users use binoculars smaller increase, so they can have a wider field of vision when using a higher magnification.

The larger the objective lens, the more light that enters the binocular, and the brighter the image. Field of View (F.O.V.): The side-to-side measurement of the circular viewing field or subject area. It is defined by the width in feet or meters of the area visible at 1000 yards or meters. A wide angle binocular features a wide field of view and is better for following action. Generally, the higher the magnification, the narrower the field of view. Roof Prism System: In roof prism binoculars the prisms overlap closely, allowing the objective lenses to line up directly with the eyepiece. The result is a slim, stream-lined shape in which the lenses and prisms are in a straight line.

Excellent Value

by A. Bilstein from Austin, TX United States on 2010-09-01
This is actually the first pair of binoculars I've purchased. We always had a pair when I was a kid when we would go on hiking trips, but that's as far as my knowledge of binoculars goes. That said, these seem like a great pair of binoculars. I decided on these based on the small size and great reviews. I can throw these in my backpack and they're so light I probably won't even know that they're there. They feel well made. The attached cord seems a bit thin, but that isn't anything I really care about.I was surprised at how inexpensive these are, yet the quality appears to be excellent. They also include a carrying pouch so that you won't scratch the lenses.

Very helpful.

by Happy from on 2010-08-27
Ordered these binoculars for myself and a friend to take when we went to see Cats. Although our seats turned out to be fairly close to the stage, we were happy to have the binoculars to see the fantastic makeup jobs. We had thought about opera glasses but were very happy with our choice.

Great lightweight binoculars

by Karen A. Wrobbel from Fox River Grove, IL United States on 2010-08-21
We purchased these for wildlife viewing. The magnification was sufficient to see many of the things I wanted to see, including animals at a distance when safety and respect for the animals would not permit getting closer. Because they are so lightweight, I was able to watch for more extended periods. I am happy with the product.

Powerful Little Binoculars

by Kelly Shannahan from Salisbury, MD USA on 2010-08-08
We tested 8 sets of compact binoculars before we decided on these. We bought 100 pairs of the Bushnell Powerview 8x21 binoculars as gifts for a group that we are hosting on an upcoming Alaska Cruise where we hope to spot whales and other wildlife. I have a much more expensive larger pair of binoculars that I will also take with me, but these are perfect for taking on excursions due to their small size (portability) and the amazing image quality. AND, you just can't beat the price.

I am an amateur astronomer and this binoculars get the job done letting you make a non deep observation of the sky at night. It's pretty easy to focus on this ones (and easy to get them out of focus). They include the binoculars (obviously) with their protective caps, a not very soft cleaning cloth, a string for hang them and a bag for carrying. The only complain I have is that after a while they feel slightly heavy, but could be because I point them up to the sky in a tiring manner.

Excellent opera glasses

by A. G. Miller from Newtown, PA, US on 2010-06-04

I can't focus it well.

by Mark from on 2010-05-16
However I tried and followed the direction, I get a blurred image and it tires my eyes out. If I close one eye and look, the image is good, but when look with both eyes, the image is very blurred and it hurts my eyes. I can't really use it for anything. I don't know why.

Bad then Good

by HPL from Cols, OH on 2010-03-09
When my binoc arrived, the optics were terrible. Vertical disintegration, no way to correct. Returned and exchanged and this pair is perfect. 12x is fine for my hands and the view is great. I miss my Minoltas (does anyone know where they went?), but these will do and the price is more than right.

Two lenses will not focus into one picture

by Robert Dickinson from Covington, In United States on 2010-02-09
Bought these as Christmas gift for my spouse, and right after Christmas we took a motorhome trip, not testing them until we were on the road. We both did everything possible to get the left and right sides to come together as one picture but to our great disappointment nothing helped. Although rated highly on Amazon by other customers, this was a defective pair of binoculars. Problem now is that we were on the road for over 30 days and now it's too late to return them for a full refund.

perfect for our needs

by Rick from Oklahoma City, OK USA on 2010-09-02
We use these for watching birds and other things in the back porch over a large park in the back yard. They have a good field of vision, wide enough, and great magnification for casual watching. For the price I couldn't be more pleased. Great clarity, and easily adjustable between me and my wife who have very different visual abilities and limitations. Glad I got them.

by J. A. Berry from Wood River, Illinois United States on 2010-06-03
Bought a pair of these five years ago and used them maybe four times. A couple of days ago I got them out and when I took them out of the case the focus bar did not work and the eyepieces fell out. They were never dropped or mishandled. Great the few times I got to use them, but definitely not worth the money I wasted on them.

Pricing Extremely Well

by Elzinga O'Neil from Lansing, MI on 2010-02-03
The Binoculars work quite well for viewing sporting events. I got them for just under $40 marked down from about $80. Although they are a little heavy and bulky, they work very well and serve the purpose without having to treat them like fine china.

Description

Celestron and ;s SkyMaster Series of large aperture binoculars are a phenomenal value for high performance binoculars ideal for astronomical viewing or for terrestrial (land) use - especially over long distances. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BAK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast. Celestron has designed and engineered the larger SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions. The 15x70 version is one of the most popular models in the series. It offers serious large aperture light gathering in an affordable and reasonably lightweight configuration.

Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It's easy to spend less than $100 or more than $500 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside. Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of $150, even $200. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less. Celestron's 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a photo tripod, which is a must to use them to their fullest, and a soft carrying case. But just because they are cheap doesn't always mean they are worth the price. Would it be better to save up for a more expensive pair? To find the answer, I had an opportunity recently to judge the SkyMasters against a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars , one of the finest pairs of giant binoculars sold today. Like the SkyMasters, the Fujinons feature BaK-4 prisms, but also have fully multicoated optics. As a general rule, superior coatings mean superior image sharpness and contrast. But then, that should be expected, given that the Fujinons cost many times more than the Celestrons. While the Fujinons were clearly the better performer, the Celestron SkyMasters held up admirably. Image brightness, quality, and contrast were all remarkable considering their bargain price. Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless. Some inexpensive binoculars have very sloppy focusing, causing the eyepieces to tilt and shift. Not so with the SkyMasters. I found that their center-focusing mechanism worked smoothly, with no apparently backlash or wobble. Eye relief (the distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepieces to see the full field) is stated to be 18 mm, a good distance for higher power binoculars and an important consideration if you must wear glasses when viewing. The SkyMasters are also light enough to support by hand for short periods of time, although buyers would be well advised to mount them on a sturdy photo tripod. The bottom line is, if you are considering a pair of giant binoculars, whether for bird watching, stargazing, or another recreational use, and have a limited budget, Celestron's giant 15x70 SkyMasters represent an excellent value. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch Pros: Exceptional value for the price Light enough to support by hand BaK-4 prisms Multicoated optics Cons: Outer 25% of the field is soft and a little blurry Requires a tripod to use for extended periods

  • Multi-coated optics
  • Large aperture perfect for low light conditions and stargazing
  • Tripod adapter
  • Long eye relief ideal for eyeglass wearers

Nice Binoculars, Terrible Tripod Adapter.

by Bruce E Bowman from Clayton, IN USA on 2010-08-20
These binoculars are big, weigh 4 pounds, have lots of magnification and a narrow field of view. They are not something to just carry with you to a football game. They are nice for astronomy, giving good light grasp for very low cost. The main problem is the tripod adaptor, which is plastic and has no lateral bracing.Binoculars with more than 10x magnification cannot be held steady by hand. You must have a tripod and attach them to it. Therefore, the adaptor is CRITICAL, and this one is all but useless. If I so much as touch my nose to the side of one of the eyepieces, these binoculars begin to oscillate from side to side, taking maybe 10 seconds to die out.I'm going to have to find an aftermarket adapter for this product.

EXCELLENT BUY!

by JAMES HAWK from DE on 2010-08-17
For the price, these glasses are fantastic. I think they're easier to hand hold than I thought they'd be at least for an adult. I may even buy the step up; which is the 20 x 80's, although these are really great.

Great Product Value

by D. Sprigg from on 2010-08-14
This is a great product for the price. Very clear viewing. I was a bit concerned about weight. But that really is not much of a problem as it is well balanced.

I think ours was built in a hurry.

by HostileHST from Oregon, USA on 2010-08-11
When we bought these, we had no idea it would take 2 weeks before they would get shipped, once shipped, we got our in just days, BUT, the left lens had dust on the inside barrel and on the inside of the lens (with some smearing taboot). There was some green fringing at all ranges of use and this horrible ability to make us go cross eyed, BUT, for 15x and 70mm lenses, they do quiet well in most lighting situations, after your eyes come to terms with them that is. I personally think the manufacture was in a hurry to build these and skimped on the usual quality control, or, the company is simply going down hill, but I rather give them the benefit of the doubt and we just got a beat up pair.

Great Binos, but they are too much power for casual, hassle-free observing.

by Havlidan from on 2010-08-04
I'll start off with a few words about the optical quality, which in my opinion is very good. You really can't find a better deal on binoculars for this aperture size and magnification. That being said, this is a little bit TOO good of a deal, where the added magnification becomes a problem. These binoculars NEED some sort of sturdy mount. I bought them as an upgrade from naked eye astronomy-I wanted something that would give me views of some of the fainter objects in the sky (messier objects, star clusters, exc) without me needing to make the big purchase of a telescope or any sort of tripod. Unfortunately, these binos just have too much power to be steadily held in the hands. Even when lying on my back I had problems keeping them steady, as every object I observed looked like dancing streaks of light through the binos. It was really quite frustrating. I eventually decided to build a parallelogram binocular mount, which has made my experiences with these binoculars much, much better. The wide view makes star clusters look fantastic, you can see Jupiter and 4 of its moons, as well as faint views of the messier objects. All in all, these are fantastic binoculars IF and ONLY IF you have some way of mounting them. Unfortunately, this defeats a large part of the simplicity of binocular astronomy-the ability to go out on a whim with nothing but the binos and enjoy a night under the stars. The binoculars themselves are of great quality and you can't beat the price-just make sure that you know you will need some sort of binocular mount before you purchase them.

I can see! I can see!

I wanted a pair of binocs to keep in my home office so I'd have them handy for occasional bird watching outside my window. The size, weight, and clarity of these are perfect for my use. They fold up into a compact size and have a nice travel case included, so I plan on taking them with me when I travel to the racetrack in the fall. I'm really glad I bought them and plan on buying another pair to give as a gift. The price is right for such a nice pair of binoculars.

i researched binoculars and decided on these. they were for my husband and all the reviews listed these as a good buy for the price and quality. when he got them he was pleased and liked how small they were and convenient and how good they worked to see things far away. we are very happy with these binoculars and did not break the bank!!!!

Pretty Bad

by Fred Bauer from on 2010-06-17
These are very poor binoculars. The optics are very low contrast, no very sharp, very difficult to focus, flare easily. The focus wheel has lots of slack and feels junky. The eye pieces have very little tolerance, frustrating to use. Pay a little more and get something you will enjoy.

The H2O binoculars feature rubber armoring with textured pads to give you a sturdy grip in slippery situations. More significantly, the binoculars' multicoated optics and premium-quality BaK-4 prism glass maximize light transmission and image clarity, so you can enjoy a clear view of the Orcas in the distance or the fast-approaching coastline. Great View

by Peter W.Gay from CANTON, GA, US on 2010-08-09
The Bushnell H20 10x42 Porro Prism Waterproof/Fogproof Binocular works as described by Bushnell. I was looking to replace binoculars that I had lost several years ago,Probably at a concert. I have recently taken up bird watching and wanted to be able to see all the fine details and identify what I was looking at. I am very please with the performance of this product. Great range and clarity.

Birthday Binoculars

Bought these for my Dad just before his trip to Alaska. They were a hit.

Not Impressed

by Rick B. Moore from on 2010-07-10
Maybe it's because we have not owned a pair of binoculars for 20 years or so, or that we both wear glasses, we expected more. Ordered to take on vacation to eastern coast mainly for ocean bird viewing, maybe they are the wrong strength or type? They are just O.K in our opinion

Great for the Price

by Ni Yachen from Anchorage, AK USA on 2010-06-13
I have had these for about a month and they work great. They are clear and crisp. They also appear to handle the abuse that I give them. These are great causal or starter binoculars and you can't beat the price. Only if you are a serious birdwatcher or have other special need should you consider going for anything more expensive.

GREAT BINOCULARS FOR A LITTLE MONEY

by Susan K. Haynes from Paris, Texas USA on 2010-09-01
I bought these binoculars after reading so many positive reviews about them, and they do not disappoint. They're perfect for backyard bird or butterfly watching. Images are sharp and clear. I needed something light to hold because I am recovering from a broken shoulder, and can't hold anything heavy for long. These are PERFECT for my needs.

Work perfectly, smell bad

by Erica from on 2010-08-28
I'm pleased with the quality of these. They emit a strong, unpleasant chemical smell, though. Not that big a deal for my purposes, but I wouldn't want to use them daily.

poor optics alignment

by Aiden from on 2010-08-28
the unit i received showed double images which make the binocular useless... no eye adjustment/focus could bring the two images together. build material was acceptable.

Fits the bill

by Annette L. Desrocher from on 2010-08-15
These binoculars were purchased for the purpose of bird watching in my back yard. I did not want to spend a lot of money on something that was not going to be used all the time. They have worked out beautifully.....

Fun and small

by Funwithgames from on 2010-08-11
Excellent buy. I received these binos a few days ago and I use them mostly for looking at animals and insects in my backyard from a safe distance. I found them surprisingly small and lightweight for the amount of magnification I got out of them. I have small hands and they are pretty much palm sized. The cups on the lens you look into can be folded and unfolded. It also comes with a little carrying pouch. The strap is thin, a bit like a shoestring attached to binoculars. I love the feature where you can adjust the eye seperately to match the other side. Make sure you read the instructions it comes with to do that correctly. One of the best low price buys I've ever made on Amazon hightly recommend these.

Like them but don't love them (yet)

by Sabad One from on 2010-08-18
I use binoculars/spotting scopes for bird or wildlife watching a lot but I cannot say I am an expert so keep this in mind. Also, I have only used this with the eye-cups set for someone like me who uses eyeglasses.I have purchased these a few weeks ago and I have already used them many times while hiking. They are lightweight and the strap feels solid and secure. The quality of the optics is very good and brightness with the 8x42 was very good as well. I also like the rubber coating which will add durability and improves hand grip. I like the front and back lens covers, which adds peace of mind when I have the binocular in my backpack, although I have to say that I still find them a bit cumbersome. Maybe with time I will get used to them. The one not-too-minor thing that I don't particularly like is that after a few weeks of use I still have some difficulties with positioning the binocular in front of my eyeglasses. I often have to struggle to optimize the binocular vision and blind areas keep invading my vision field. Previously I was using an average-quality Olympus 8x42 binocular and I was finding that one easier to use. But perhaps I just need more time and overall I am happy with this product and would most likely purchase it again. As an aside, I purchased this binocular from Adorama (through Amazon) and as in all my previous dealings with them their service was extremely fast, even with the cheapest shipping option.

Animal watching

Arrived quickly and well packed. Only took us a few minutes to learn to focus and learning to hold correctly when watching wildlife. We like the construction, feel, and smooth operation

Disappointed...

by ScienceAndMath from Texas, USA on 2010-07-23
I bought these binoculars as a midway purchase between the $100 cheapies and the $1000 professional binoculars. The only difference I can note so far between these and the $100 cheapies is these are lighter. The view is no better or larger. Also the eyepiece cover does not fit well onto the two eye lenses and so it comes off when the binoculars are stored in the case. The binoculars have an adjustment for eyeglasses wearers but I have not found it useful when wearing my glasses and using the binoculars. I have to take my glasses off to use the binoculars comfortably. In the Amazon.com product picture the binoculars appear to be large but they were actually much smaller than I expected. I would not pay what I did for these binoculars again. Hope this review helped...

8 x 42 Monarch binoculars

by Keith from on 2010-07-22
The bincoulars are clear and light weight. The quality is apparent and the focus and brightness are great for the cost. The only thing I don't particularly like is the lens covers. The front and rear lens covers are a problem. They do not fit securely to the bioculars. The front covers come off the binoculars when they are removed from the case. Also the carrying case secures with velcro which is extremely loud when unfastened which is not conducive to a hunting environment. These issues are mainly with the binocular accessories not the actual binoculars themselves. The function of bringing objects to closer view with extreme clarity and brightnes is superb. I have only had them for about a month so I can't attest to their durabiltiy, but the warranty they come with speaks volumes for the manufacturer's confidence in their workmanship.

Well Made Binoculars

Very well made Binoculars. Very sturdy, smooth focus, wide neck strap, excellent light gathering and focus, very comfortable to hold. Highly recommended for birding etc.
