Lookout Surveillance - Night Vision Goggles

Imagine being able to view images in total darkness. This is what night vision goggles give you the ability to do. While mostly in use by law enforcement and military, night vision goggles are available to the public as well. You can click through to lookoutsurveillance.com.au to view and purchase a number of surveillance products.

How night vision works:

Most night vision goggles consist of an image intensifier tube, a water proof frame and a mounting mechanism. If you have ever heard of infrared light, then you are on the right track with how these night vision goggles work. First of all, an infrared band detects ambient light which is reflected on the area being viewed. Then, another component called the image intensifier tube in the night vision goggles amplifies faint light by use of the photoelectric effect. Inside the tube, photons of incoming light reach a deflector plate which ejects a number of electrons. Those electrons are then amplified into a surge of more electrons. A powerful electric field pulls the electrons towards a phosphor screen which produces light at the electron impact point. This allows the phosphor screen to produce a bright image.

Night vision goggles first came to use during World War II, then were more broadly used during the Vietnam War. Nowadays, night vision goggles find their way into the areas of law enforcement and also search and rescue surveillance. If you are researching night vision goggles for your surveillance needs, lookoutsurveillance.com.au will have the answers to your questions. In addition to night vision goggles, they offer a wide array of other surveillance equipment sure to fit your needs.

Night vision goggles are regulated by law in certain countries. It may be that the country that you are living in has some restrictions on night vision goggles. Be sure to check out the regulations governing this surveillance product as you may be infrining those regulations. Civilians may be allowed to possess and utilize a lower classification of night vision goggles.

Good Night Vision Monocular

by D. Michael Sanford from on 2010-07-13
I wanted a good night vision monocular to check out the woods behind the house at night since I hear all kinds of sounds but never see anything. The usable visible accuracy of these monoculars are less than 50 yards, so if your looking for a real clear N/V scope these aren't the ones you want. Even at 50 yards, the acuity is not that great although you can make out whether or not your looking at a human or a deer. This monocular is the first generation (the 1+), when you step up to 2nd, or 3rd and 4th generation, the price increases accordingly. I doubt that most people would need a 3 or 4th generation unit, in fact, the US forces rarely use 4th generation, they mostly use the 3rd. The battery usage is minimal but I would go and buy a box of batteries to have in stock. They are not batteries that can be found easily unless you go to Radio Shack or a similar store to buy them. I'm very satisfied with this N/V scope. The covering is water proof as well as the controls. It is not heavy but it is not something you can put in your pocket to carry. It does come with a neck strap. I also has a auto power off to save the battery.

Works well for basic night vision

by M. Taylor from United States on 2010-02-12
The first unit that was shipped to me did not work at all. I returned it to ATN and they shipped me a new unit as soon as they came back in stock. The second unit works fine, the image you get is a greenish glow and we use it to spy on furry little creatures that congregate in our backyard at night. It does not have a great range, so don't expect it to "bring" images closer to you, at least not very much. For the price, it works well. I recommend it to anyone wanting a basic night vision unit.

Ideal for hunting, camping, boating, or surveillance, the ATN Viper expandable goggle system makes it easy to see in the dark while keeping your hands free for activities. The first-generation, high-resolution night-vision unit features a magnification ratio of 1x, but offers the option of expanding to 4x or 8x. More significantly, the unit is extremely versatile: you can use it for hands-free activities such as fishing or paintball, as a compact monocular, or attach it to a camera for nighttime photography. And even though ATN outfitted the Viper with a heavy-coated glass lens, the company managed to keep the weight down to only 9 ounces. The Viper fits around your head via a comfortable fabric strap, which includes both forehead and chin pads for security. The goggle itself, meanwhile, offers such features as a built-in IR illuminator, an automatic brightness control, an adjustable eyepiece, a manual focus system, and single-switch button operation. An excellent alternative to night-vision binoculars, the Viper is water-and dust-resistant and comes with a soft case. Specifications: Intensifier tube: 1st-gen +1 high resolution Lens system: 35mm, f/1.0 Resolution: 40 lp/mm Detection range: 150 meters Recognition range: 100 meters Minimum light required: 3x0.001 lux Focal range: 1 foot to infinity Field of view: 14 degrees Diopter: +/- 5 Battery life: 8 to 10 hours (continuous) Power supply: 3-volt lithium battery Dimensions: 5 by 2 by 1 inches (W x H x D) Weight: 1 pound Warranty: 2 years

  • Heavy-coated glass lens; single-switch button operation

Avoid, this device is non functional, it is worthless

by furnic from Florida, USA on 2010-08-21
You can see better with the naked eye in pitch black than with this device. I am not sure what type of quality control ATN have, but it must be fairly low standards if this is the type of devices they are manufacturing.A dog in a dark night is visible from say 10 -20 yards with the naked eye, but use this ATN Viper and all you see is a blur. It couldn't even really define a huge tree from less than 30 yards, all you see is a big blury something in front of you. The only way to see in the dark with this is to pack it away and use your eyes.I tested this in various conditions, full moon, no moon, stars, infra red on/off, different batteries and overall result in this is an expensive piece of nothing.

Not too great

by John T from The Peoples Republic of Maryland on 2010-04-30
The product itself is a great idea. However, the IR light is very visible to anyone you may be looking at. Also, like with most Generation 1 models the depth perception is an issue as is the field of view. Hence, it doesn't work very well as a "goggle." The definition is better than many Gen-1 models. However, I've seen better light gathering capabilities (with/without IR) using a child's night vision toy for only 70 bucks (Jax night vision for kids). You may want to look at a generation two model instead of this one.

Don't bother

by Scott M. Hartman from Arizona on 2009-12-06
The headset was flimsy and gave me a headache. It was not the same headset as seen in the picture. Also, I hiked with it and could not see much of anything and the images were blurred. It was hard to tell the distance of things like trees and branches. It made the hike unenjoyable. Plus, I bought it for nighttime wildlife viewing, but it lights up at night, making it impossible to hide from wildlife in the dark.

Great toy for BIG boys

by Guadalupe Tofalo from on 2009-12-03
Ok, is not the top top of the line, but it is a great product for the price! I bought it for my dad and took it to Argentina to give it to him, he was soo happy! My mom keeps on telling me that at night he walks in the garden with it, just to play... he loves it, great toy for big boys.

Not goggles--a monocular--and defective to boot.

by Alesia from on 2009-08-13
There is no way you can keep one eyed closed during the entire time you'd be wearing this; when I initially did a search on Amazon it was for "goggles," not a monocular, so the title is misleading. And having both eyes open while using it isn't an option as what you see out of each eye is quite different. However, ours was defective so this is really a moot point: Regardless of which position the on/off switch is in, the device stays on as long as the battery is installed. So quality-control is obviously an issue in at least a third of cases with this device (given that the other two reviews were both positive).

GREAT BUY!!

by S. Shughart from IL on 2008-11-27
These duel tube 1x binoculars with focusable IR. Being a noobie to NV I dont have anything to compare them to. That being said, after hearing so many negative remarks about Gen 1 I was amazed at how clearly I can see with these goggles. They are light weight, easy to focus and have excellent depth perception. The downsides are the headgear which is not very user friendly and a minor point off for the IR which emmits a barely visible red light. The red light does not shine into the room, but you can see it if you look directly at the goggles. I would definately recommend these!

Night Owl Explorer Marine Pro Blue 5x Waterproof Monocular USA

I have been looking for an affordable night vision scope for years, and I believe I have found it in the aptly named Night Owl Explorer. The well-thought-out design and powerful optics make this scope a pure pleasure to use. Since finding it, I have spent many nights standing on my back porch exploring with my eyes the area around my home. With the Night Owl, you will see an image as if you just looked through a regular optical device, except the image will appear in a monochrome green color. This little gem literally turns night into day: There is not an area in my yard that is not visible to me, even on the darkest of nights. It works like a powerful spotlight, directing a very bright beam visible only through the lens. The Night Owl fit my hand perfectly, and the deep blue rubber outer coating made for a nice look and feel, while also weatherproofing the unit. The handy strap held it tight to my palm, placing both the Power and the Illuminator buttons directly under my fingers for easy control. The care taken with the Night Owl extends to the smallest of details, including power management: Simply setting it down turns the power off so you will never accidently run the batteries down. --Dave Cole Pros Small and lightweight Ergonomic design Effectively turns night into day Water resistant Built-in Illuminator Cons No tripod mounting Separate focus for front and rear lenses Slightly soft focus at the edges of the field

The Night Owl Explorer Marine Pro night-vision scope gives you a premium performance tool that is engineered to higher than usual specifications. The two-piece body is coated in a "night blue" weather-resistant rubber, making this monocular ideal for hiking, fishing, nocturnal wildlife observations, and many other outdoor activities where you don't want to worry about the weather damaging your equipment. It can be used within a temperature range of -22 to 113 degrees F (-30 C to 45 degrees C). The high-grade objective lens has a focal length of 80mm and gives you a camera quality, 5x magnification level and superior optical resolution. When the sturdy construction and rubber-coated, 100-percent waterproof finish is combined with the ergonomic soft-touch control buttons and indicator lights, you get a high-quality monocular equipped with exceptional engineering advancements. Requires one 3V lithium battery to operate.

Features

  • Weather-resistant two-piece rubber-coated body; 100-percent waterproof for use in any weather condition
  • Has ergonomic soft-touch control buttons and indicator lights
  • Superior optical resolution
  • Range of view is 650 feet
  • Spectral sensitivity of 400-900nm (nanometers)

DON'T BUY, IT'S A PIECE OF CRAP

by Jaime Passy from on 2009-11-05
I was anticipating this night vision monocular to be great. I was really excited and anxious to get it. When I did, I almost puked with regret.First of all, it's heavy and bulky, absolutely not comfortable to carry around for a long time. Second, the viewfinder is so small, it seems you're watching through a straw, LITERALLY. Third, it's almost impossible to focus on something. The central focal point is so small that everything around it blurs drastically. Fourth, the minimum focal distance is about 6 feet, anything closer doesn't focus at all.Bottom line, paying $200 to look through a straw where everything is blurry sucks. The worst buy i've done in years (and I've shopped a bunch). Seriously, I've never written a bad review on anything because I didn't think it was worth it. There's always a first. PLEASE DON'T BUY, YOU'LL THANK ME LATER.

GREAT PRODUCT FOR THE MONEY!

by Michael A. Morgan from on 2009-09-21
Well, for the price, you cant really complain. The only problem I read in other reviews and found true myself was the battery issue. The battery does not fit, so in turn, it doesnt work. I had to rig it a little with wiring so the battery would fit inside and get a connection. Aside from that, the night vision is Gen1 and fine. I probably viewed approx 35 yards without IR. IR is a big help of course...though it can be visibly detected if you are using it ( for those that use it for Paintballing, airsoft etc). But without IR, i was able to see fairly well in at night. It will come in handy for my camping trips and other outdoor activites.

Some Good, Lots Bad

by Erik R Gregory from Monterey, CA United States on 2007-11-06
The good--you can see fairly well in the dark at very close range. The bad--specs say 5x magnification...and it doesn't do anything like that. In fact, no zoom capability whatsoever. When I called Night Owl's support to ask about that, the support person had no idea what I was talking about. I phoned the next day and the next--the same person answered the phone every time and she knew NOTHING about the product! I wrote an email to Night Owl--no response. So this product DID NOT deliver (at least to me) what it promised in the specs and there is NO SUPPORT for it. Have returned and have no intention of going Night Owl again.

Great product for the money

by Rxdrug from on 2007-09-29
Personally I think this night vision scope performs great. The first night that I got it I tried it out, and I am pleased with the visibility range and clairty for the most part the unit produces. As someone else said, it has a bubble effect where it has a clear picture, but its alittle bit hazy/distorted on the outside edges (which dosnt make much of a difference at all. It works good with or without the IR illuminator activated (the IR illuminator gives better/brighter picture out past 150 feet, and makes reflective surfaces such as license plates and nocternal animal eyes light up). The unit on a night thats not cloudy and the moon is out can see the advertised distance (600-650 feet) well enough to pick out details in the terrain and people/animals walking around.Be advised that if you are looking for a night vision unit that can be used as an alternate to a flashlight, this is not the unit for you. Adjusting the two lenses (eye peice and main lense) is alittle tricky, espically if you plan on walking while doing so. The unit is also worthless for viewing anything closer then 10 feet. This night vision unit should be only used for viewing at a mid-range distance while standing still.

Night Owl Optics is widely recognized for embracing the latest technology and standards in night vision optics, and the Tactical NOBG1 binoculars are no exception. Night Owls' most compact set of binoculars, the NOBG1 can be used as standalone binoculars--ideal for spotting bats or other nocturnal creatures--or you can attach them to the included head mount. The latter option is terrific for hiking in the dark, when you'd like to have your hands free but still want to see objects in the distance. Plus, the head mount gear is comfortable and versatile, with pushbutton mounting flexibility for the goggle unit. And should the binoculars get in your way but you don't have time to remove them, you can simply flip them up and out of the line of vision. The binoculars sport a high-grade objective lens with a 26mm focal length, along with a lightweight, compact housing that's perfect for traveling. As a result, you can easily spot interesting creatures or landmarks in the evening hours. All Night Owl lenses are also coated specifically for nighttime viewing to further enhance light gathering and image brightness. This is achieved by treating the advanced optical components with a premium coating of different layers of metal oxides and fluorides to ensure minimum reflections on the glass surface and increased light transmission. The 1x magnification system, meanwhile, delivers a 455-foot viewing range and a 9.5-inch close focusing range. Hey it works but i'll update it through it's life

by i love amazon from on 2007-06-05
Received it promptly from amazon with free shipping. Item is made in Belarus. Instructions are sufficient enough. Please note, you need to purchase the ultra rare N-battery(mostly used for medical devices) - I checked every local store and all did not carry it. I had to buy it from amazon and paid a hefty shipping price because it was a third party.Let's move on to the goggles. The item is divided into two parts, one is the binocular part the other is the head strap. The head strap sure looks scary (like something used in the movie SAW) but is easy to put on and adjust. You can adjust the circumference and then the tightness and comes with a chin strap to make it tighter. I have a big head - about 16 inches around, and it fits with a little more room for adjustment. Overall, it should fit almost anyone. The worst thing I am afraid of the goggle part is the two buttons, these buttons seem like they will be stuck if press to hard, so don't press to hard! The feel of this item is not the best; it still feels like it's cheap but all I can say right now is it works.I tried it outdoors at night, ultra pitch dark and it gives a good image. I say the clarity is 8 out of 10. Maybe I could have some better focusing, but I tried and tried and that was the best I can come up with. For 557 dollars it provides an adquedate use for night vision; I'm sure they are many out there that are even clearer, but you will have to pay an even bigger price.I'll try to update on this product as time passes.

I love it, works good for money gen 1

by A. Benetoli from CT on 2007-10-26
I got one of this and I really love, its not the best one, you know, but for the price, I paid $91.00 used one. But it works very good out side, in closed area the bright light can really be unpleasant for your eyes. but you really can see in complete darkness so that is the point of the IR. I can see a clock against wall in my living room im complete darkness at 24 four feet. And the diopter has very good focus, very clear picture. This one is better than Yukon NVMT 4x50mm gen 1st (Mfr#24027) because I bought both and returned the Yukon.

Night Owl Optics

by Robert O. Brenner from Sunbury, OH USA on 2007-03-08
The Night Owl Optics monocular had a major flaw as soon as I started using it. The system uses high voltage derived from 2-AA bateries. Occationally the unit would create a large snap(arcing noise) and emit a bright flash of light from the eyepiece. If one is using the instrument, the light actually hurts the eye. I have returned the monocular to Night Owl for repairs. I do not know the result of the repairs as it is still in transit. They told me to ship it at my expense. Another strange requirement of the instrument is that the batteries are recommended to be removed if not used for 24 hours. Other than the above, the monocular has performed well. epilogue-Night Owl Optics did repair the unit and returned it.

Night Owl 3.1x

by Ismar Barouke from Arlington, VA, USA on 2007-01-15
Not bad, on the whole, for watching wildlife in the dark. Good illumination and nice balance between magnification, field of view, and use w/o a tripod. Sharpness falls off at the edges of the viewing area. I could recommend this to wildlife watchers who might be considering their first night-vision device. Since this was my first, I have no comparative information on whether there might be better ones out there.

It's really what they offer

by A. Rios from Medellin, Colombia on 2006-11-14
Hello, I'm glad with this product, I haven't try it yet outside my house but in a really dark condition it works pretty well, I need to turn on the IR button and clearly I can read even a sign on a bottle in total darkness. this thing really works

Not useful

by O.S. from Chile on 2006-11-10
I bought this item over a year ago, and it has never served for anything. Once I spotted a deer and turned on the "IR" illuminator, and the deer ran away - not too surprising, it is actually a red light and totally visible for most animals. Better use a flashlight. This is a first-generation nightscope, and has a very small range of utility: If there is a little light, the adapted human eye sees better, and if there is almost no light the device does not see either. 100 bucks is not too much of a waste, but if you are serious about nightvision you should spend about 10 times as much.

OK for the price.

by Alex Forrester from on 2010-04-01
Good: -Resolution is good, the gen 1+ tube gives twice the resolution of many competing brands and focus is pretty sharp for a 1st gen. -Excellent optics. -The unit is quite sensitive, neighbors' porch lights are enough to illuminate their entire yard in most cases - less if they are using compact fluorescent bulbs (less IR emitted). I spotted a black lab puppy in my neighbor's yard from 1/4 mile. That's impressive for a 1st gen. -This is actually a 1st+ gen tube and you notice significant reductions in light blooms and distortion - even in the periphery. Combined, they make the image much more useful. -Available attachments - esp. the camera attachment and lens doubler - make the unit expandable.Bad: -First unit quit after 4 days!!! -The built-in IR illuminator is almost worthless - .1 watts according to the company. You can buy an add-on for ~$100 but it's only .45 watts. By contrast you can make your own 3 watt illuminator for under $30. -Contrast needs to be higher; it often feels like you're looking through fog. Contrast is better on my cheaper Bushnell. -Brighter conditions revealed many irregularities in the tube, making the image appear speckled. -There is a design flaw in the placement of the proximity sensor. A finger will usually get close enough to make the unit say on when carrying it. This happened with all 6 people who used it.Overall: Price makes this unit one of the best 1st gen NV devices on the market. The device feels sturdy (even though mine broke) and all buttons and adjustments worked fine. I'd love to see more contrast and fewer irregularities in the tube. BUY THIS THROUGH AMAZON! Great price and no hassle with the exchange.
