Combining a pair of binoculars with a digital camera is a brilliant idea with endless possibilities, with useful applications from birdwatchers documenting their greatest "catches" to parents zooming in on their kids on the playing field. Unfortunately, Bushnell’s Imageview digital binoculars, which integrate digital imaging into a pair of 10x25 binoculars, may be ahead of their time. The image quality of the binoculars isn’t a problem, as they employ clear optics that allow for sharp focusing at the fixed 10x zoom level. Build quality also is good, with thick rubber coating on the sides to ensure a good grip and fold-down rubber eyecups to accommodate eyeglass wearers. The small 25mm objective lenses, however, don’t provide substantial light-gathering but do keep the design as small and light as possible The built-in camera will be the real problem for most users. It uses a low-resolution CCD that snaps pictures at a fixed resolution of 640 x 480, which is fine for e-mail but not adequate for making prints. To make matters worse, most of the shots we took were grainy, with lots of compression artifacts and subpar color. If you can live with those limitations, the camera does have the benefits of ease of use and plenty of image-storaging capacity. With 8 MB of built-in memory, we snapped nearly 150 pictures before connecting the camera to a PC. No image preview is available, but a basic black-and-white LCD display on top of the camera tells you how many pictures you’ve snapped and the selected mode. With a better digital camera and removable memory slots, this idea of a high-quality camera-binocular hybrid could realize its full potential. However, the image quality compromises imposed by the Imageview will be too much for many to bear, regardless of the low price. --T. No updated drivers

The binoculars worked fine, but I have no idea how the cameral worked. We have 3 computers (laptops) with 3 different operating systems - windows 2000, vista & windows 7. The drivers provided on the CD would not work with any of these. I called Bushnell & was told that there were no available updates. So unless you have a very old computer, I wouldn't buy this model.

Not what you expect from Bushnell

Excellent idea but Bushnell really fell down on the job with this one. My fiance bought this used for $10.00 and now I'm glad she didn't pay anymore for them. It's my job to figure out any new gadgets she gets so I went to Bushnell's site first and after some browsing, I found the binoculars and there was a manual available in PDF (it shows the camera functions only) but no drivers to be found. Luckily the disc she got with the purchase worked!! She has Photoshop already so all I installed were the drivers from the CD onto her XP Pro computer. There is absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION on how to get the pictures off the camera so I opened Photoshop and used import and sure enough Bushnell was there. I clicked on it and the Bushnell software came up but it's a "by guess and by gosh" process to figure out how to transfer the pictures from the camera into Photoshop. Once transferred, I checked image size and it was 640x480 at 1mp per inch, so scenery is visible but I have my doubts as to small animals etc. Another thing that irritated me was that I couldn't get the 2 sides of the binoculars close enough together to get a good view, in other words I had to look through 1 lens at a time. I've never had that problem with a pair of binoculars before. Bushnell has always been a good name but they sure couldn't prove it with this product. Buyer BEWARE!!!!!!!

The driver disk that I have will not work anymore, so I figured that I could download it online. However, it is not available anywhere for download. Now I am stuck with a product that is useless to me. Do not waste your money on this or any other Bushnell product, customer support is non-existent!

The company which fufills orders for this item has a contract with UPS that does not allow UPS to hold the item for pick up at the customer's convenience... I have better things to do than wait around all day for the UPS guy... I would not order from these people unless you know you can wait at home all day for delivery...

Unfortunatly when I opened the box and attempted to use the new device it did not work. Only the non electronic standard binocular portion functioned properly.All the electronic portions were totally inoperable. I have since contacted the company to get a working model but have not heard anything back as of yet.I am hoping they will provide me with a model that actually operates. Bulkier Than Expected, Hard-to-Use Buttons, & Arrived Defective

I'd hoped to provide one, but sadly, my binoculars arrived brand new with a major defect: the display will turn on only intermittently, the binoculars won't turn off without taking the batteries out, and I've only been able to take one picture before the device's electronics stopped working.PROS: what a great idea these are--if only they'd work properly. Excluding the electronics, the binoculars themselves are of quality construction and work very nicely with an easy-to-use focusing dial.CONS: I received a defective model which makes me question the reliability of ANY model--strange, since Bushnell has a name synonymous with quality. I apologize that for that reason, I can't speak well to the picture-taking ability of the binoculars. I took one picture which turned out well and generally seemed aligned to my field of sight (I didn't notice any major parallax issue). But: the display flashed erratically and then would no longer turn on. I'm generally tech-savvy and tried to reset the binoculars several times, but to no avail. This after opening the package for the first time! I also noticed that the buttons to operate the display are quite difficult to push--they require a very firm push, and as they're very close together, it's easy to push the wrong button. For the brief moments it worked, I found the menu screen somewhat difficult--each screen selection requires that you cycle through to an "exit" selection which makes the menu more time-consuming and annoying to scroll through. Also, I found that these binoculars are heavier and slightly bulkier than expected--they certainly aren't as "pocket-sized" as some descriptions assert. And in taking a picture, there's (ridiculously?) no indication that you've taken it as you look through the binoculars; only the push of the button, no indicator sound. I would be very weary of purchasing these again as I question a product that's defective out of the box with no indication of physical damage.BOTTOM LINE: The model I received was defective--the electronics, particularly the display--would not turn on or off correctly but for once. The one picture I was able to take looked okay, but was interrupted by faulty electronics. I anticipated quality from a Bushnell product, but now I'm weary. I'm afraid that unfortunately, our binocular-camera technology just isn't up to par yet!

Extremely Satisfied

I was unsure what binocular camera to purchase, but I did some research and found out that 8X30 and Bushnell were pretty safe bets and I was not let down. I was so excited when I received the product from 123. It arrived in three days (a day earlier than the earliest estimated delivery date) and in perfect condition. I took it out on my hike to test it out worried about blurry or low quality pictures and I was not disappointed. The pictures came out beautifully...here's a tip...take a breath and hold it when you are taking the picture and hold still for a second or two while holding down the button while taking the picture. The came out great! I am so ready to take it with me on my vacation to Newfoundland and Labrador...I can get great pics without being mauled by a moose! LOL...I have never used another set of binocular camera so I can not judge against any other pair, but it definitly has better zoom than a standard digital camera. I would highly recommend this product and this seller! I couldn't have asked for a better buying experience.

Great binoculars, Not so great camera

I read the reviews on Amazon before and after buying this binoculars/camera combo. The optics of the binoculars are absolutely amazing and incredible. So clear and crisp. Worth the price I paid for it alone. But I really had higher expectations for the camera, as that was the primary reason for buying this, for my birdwatching. You have to be a good distance away from the subject to get any kind of good, clear pictures, which is possible. If it's anywhere closer than 49 feet (as stated in the manual), the subject in the pictures will be quite blurry and fuzzy. Unfortunately, my plan was to use the binoculars to see the birds in my front yard better and to capture/record them, but they were less than 49 feet away, apparently. The video quality is quite grainy/pixelated and small. Overall, I'm very happy with the binoculars, just not so much with the camera. If only you could capture exactly what you see through these great binoculars...

Poor. Just poor. Update: even poorer!

The binoculars are OK as binoculars, but are heavy and bulky with so-so eye relief and clarity. The camera menus on mine are in Asian characters and cannot be switched to English, Spanish, etc. The camera functions are therefore useless unless you can read Kanji. Or whatever. The display flickers and shows a low battery indication on two sets of brand-new batteries. The central focus dial is loose. Need I go on? This is a very poor quality item and ludicrously overpriced. Bushnell -or whomever owns the brand- should be ashamed.Update: Apparently Bushnell has no shame. The DOA binoculars were returned to Kansas for repair at my expense along with a ten-dollar check to cover their return shipping. Another 20.oo invested.Weeks later, a box appeared with a loosely packed and grubby model 118322 ImageView refurb rattling around inside. This is a cheaper, inferior model with no popup color viewing screen. The terse note enclosed tells me this is the closest model to mine, which is out of stock.The binocular optics are terrible with a fairly clear center and horrible blurring at the edge of your field of view. The center focus is gritty. The camera produces very poor image quality. It is slow to respond when taking a picture and therfore prone to blur.This is my last Bushnell purchase, period.

Fantastic up close photos and great binocular

These are great binoculars! The binoculars are of the quality you would expect from Bushnell. The digital cameera is fantastic. We went to Alaska and now hav wonderful up close photos af whales, eagles and a rarely seen black fox. Also we now have a wonderful close-up of Ichiro blown up and posted in our son's bedroom. The one downside is you have to hold it steady. Some of the photos in Alaska were taken while rafting and they were blurred. We aren't big bird watcher fans....but I imagine this would be fantastic for bird watchers! Great Binoculars! I highly recommend purchasing a gig or more storage card as you will need it for lots of photos. Download and working with the photos are a snap. This was fun and a great product.

The second time I used it, two different pieces of the battery section, including the cover, broke: the metal sprial thing for one end of the battery just fell out when I opened the battery section; and the cover prong just broke off. Man, what a waste of $[...] plus dollars, and what a dissapointment.I bought it to look at birds. Well, unless the bird is five feet in front of you, you can forget about it.

I did not think that this binocular would be a good deal for the money. I really thought it would be like a childs toy or just plain useless. I WAS WRONG!!!! I love my Bushnell Night Watch 2X24 w/Built in Infrared Binocular. There are woods behind my home and my binocular seems to work the darker it is the better the view. just some info on nvg's before you buy one

to the customer who purchased this product and stated that in a dark room, he couldn't see anything, night vision devices aren't made to let you see anything in a dark room without the aid of infra-red. yes, with the infra-red on you were able to see, but thats only because the infra-red is there for use only in poor lighting situations. on a clear night outside with the moon out and plenty of starlight, visibility is pretty good. on a cloudy night, no moon or starlight, visibility with night vision goggles isn't as good anymore. what they're designed to do is amplify the ambient light that is given off by the moon or the stars. indoors with no light source, you wont be able to see anything without using the I.R. mode.also, most civilian model night vision devices use older generation tubes, so the image probably isnt as good as it would be with newer generation tubes. if anyone would like to read more, this is the link that goes more in depth about night vision devices[...]i had to give a rating to post this, so i just went with the 3 stars to say its ok.

the Bushnell night watch is a good toy, but nothing for serious use.In a dark room I couldn't see anything at all with out the IR light on. No shapes, no outlines, nothing.With the IR light on I could see pretty well in the dark. Focus is not perfectly clear, but adequate. The objective is pretty small, but I can read the label on a cereal box in complete darkness from about 25 feet away. From farther I can make out shapes and outlines.It wasn't exactly a waste of money, but it isn't as fun or useful as I thought it would be, and in hindsight I don't think I'd buy it again.

Fun Binocular

Got this for a Fathers Day gift, he loves it!! Of course I had to take it out of the package and try it before we gave it to him, it was just as described. We could see in total darkness, the viewing field is somewhat small up close but it is sufficient to play around with. I could see my dog who was running down the yard, (about 300 or more feet)in total darkness. It is a fun binocular. My dad wanted one to see the wildlife at night at his home.

Don't bother

if you actually would like to use the camera. I purchased this item directly from Amazon as "Used-very good". Silly me. I received it promptly, decently or appropriately packaged but that's about it. Received the unit and it's carrying case. No user guide and no software, which of course seems impossible to find anywhere online. Software is important on this item because that seems to be the only way to set it up: image size, save location, date, & other preferences, etc. Lucky thing, I bought a 2MB disk to save images too, oh, wait a minute, camera seems to be saving images internally & removing disk seems to wipe test images, even when unit is turned off. Plugging USB connector results in drive errors, both on mac & PC. Good thing Amazon cust svc is there to save the day. Got my RMA, they'll "allow me" to return it & I may get my refund in 4 weeks. SUPER!Point - do not bother with Amazon used items. They do not test them for whether the item functions accordingly & do not provide a listing of what is included. You are MUCH better off taking your chances on eBay. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in Amazon's cust svc as well. Calling Cust SVc connects you to a non-US based rep the majority of the time & the language barriers only add to the frustration. Wouldn't it be nice to have relevant reps for the country from which a customer is calling to lessen communication problems. Oh wait, a company the size of Amazon wouldn't be able to afford that to service their customers.

Great reliable product

I purchased this digital binocular over five years ago and love it. Takes great pictures and mini videos. Make sure to remove batteries when not in use because it can accidentally turn on when in case which results in dead batteries. Also has a tendancy to shut off if you aren't taking pictures so check before next shot. Otherwise its a 5 star product. Great item for a great price ! Wish Bushnell would come out with a waterproof -fogproof digital camera model.

My new Bushnell Powerview 12X25 binoculars are excellent. They fit in a pocket and are totally adjustable and keep their focus. I use them for getting great views at the theatre and the ball game.

I can't focus it well.

However I tried and followed the direction, I get a blurred image and it tires my eyes out. If I close one eye and look, the image is good, but when look with both eyes, the image is very blurred and it hurts my eyes. I can't really use it for anything. I don't know why.

When my binoc arrived, the optics were terrible. Vertical disintegration, no way to correct. Returned and exchanged and this pair is perfect. 12x is fine for my hands and the view is great. I miss my Minoltas (does anyone know where they went?), but these will do and the price is more than right.

Two lenses will not focus into one picture

Bought these as Christmas gift for my spouse, and right after Christmas we took a motorhome trip, not testing them until we were on the road. We both did everything possible to get the left and right sides to come together as one picture but to our great disappointment nothing helped. Although rated highly on Amazon by other customers, this was a defective pair of binoculars. Problem now is that we were on the road for over 30 days and now it's too late to return them for a full refund.

Very good for amateur use

I am an amateur astronomer and this binoculars get the job done letting you make a non deep observation of the sky at night. It's pretty easy to focus on this ones (and easy to get them out of focus).They include the binoculars (obviously) with their protective caps, a not very soft cleaning cloth, a string for hang them and a bag for carrying.The only complain I have is that after a while they feel slightly heavy, but could be because I point them up to the sky in a tiring manner.

Bad Product and Horrible Service from Seller and Product Company

Ordered this item hoping to receive a simple way to check our multiple trail cams in the field, was really disappointed. Received the product and tried to use every size of SD card in it. The thing would randomly turn on and then would not turn off. The buttons would not work most of the time and the instructions were really not helpful at all if you happened to have any problem.I called the vendor Ace Photo Digital and they couldn't answer any questions more than giving me a number for Bushnell. Calling Bushnell they wanted me to pay to ship it to them or call Amazon to have a ticket sent to me to ship it. So, 2 different companies trying to pass the buck. Finally Bushnell agreed to send me a ticket to ship it to them for repair or replacement.Horrible experience on a really simple product that should simply work correctly.

cheap viewer

If you ask me,the one I bought was junk.A waste of money.Take my advice and use a regular digital camera to view your pictures with.The Bushnell viewer that I bought would not view my sd card pictures and also caused me to loose my pictures that were on the sd card.I have nener been a fan of Bushnell anyway.SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it is somewhat my fault but I thought that this was an actual camera with a built in viewer! The title should be changed to camera viewer! I was trying to purchase this quickly so my husband didn't see me (it was a Christmas present).

Disappointed

I cannot recommend this product. The black and white low resolution display is the biggest disadvantage of the unit. Firstly, it will take your eye several minutes to get used to the dark after getting white light from the display to your eye. When out in the dark, the last thing you want is to get blinded by white light and I cannot understand why Bushnell came up with the b&w display. Secondly the display has low resolution, so details in the surroundings will not be seen. Thirdly, the display is small. When using the extra infrared illuminator, only things illuminated could be seen, not the surroundings. The on/off switch is placed in such a way that when the unit is in its carrying bag, one can accidently turn it on, resulting in 6 empty AA-batteris and unoperable monocular. It has happened to me several times that the unit is turned on, when opening its carrying bag. I happen to own Prowler 4.0 X 50mm, also from Bushnell, and that is a much better product (not a perfect one of course), giving you much better resolution and better image.

Amazing especially for the price.

I was at first always kind of worried about getting a night optics thinking that it was just some expensive mockery that wasn't worth the money. Well I decided to buy this and just go for it, and was out right amazed and impressed. In complete darkness were I couldn't see my hand infront of my face or any light in the area, I turned this sucker on and without even useing the iluminator add on could see perfectly. The ability to change how bright the light intensity was really helped to so that the picture on the digital screen in the eye piece wasn't bled white. I haven't had the chance to try viewing something at a distance more than a hondred yards but so far I am really impressed and glad that I bought it. Also when you turn the spotlight IR on a circular white huh of all that is illuminated appears on the screen.

Impressive performance but not cheap

Bushnell Digital Stealth View 5x42 w/ Super Charged Infrared MonocularI purchased this scope in Canada; oddly enough when I went to order it from a US website they would not ship it here.The image is very bright and can be a bit blinding in a dark location. When you remove your eye from the eyepiece it will take you a minute or so to regain your natural night vision in that eye; good job it's only a monocular, at least you'll have one working eye! One push button makes it brighter and another button dims it just as quickly; dimming it reduces the contrast. I got the impression that this is just a feature of infra-red viewing rather than a problem with the scope. After using the scope for a while I have learned to prefer a lower light level.The only other two buttons are the on/off switch and the super IR switch, both of these are push buttons rather than slide switches. I would prefer a slide switch for the on/off function as it is too easy to turn the unit on simply by picking it up in its flexible case. A small and discrete green led indicates that the unit is on, it is not visible except to the user, and will flash to a indicate low battery. I haven't used it enough to say how long the 6 AA batteries last, but they claim 2 - 8 hours depending on how much you use the super IR.I am used to using binoculars and found this unit surprisingly ergonomic for a monocular. You will have no problem operating it in darkness once you are familiar with the layout, the buttons are all on top where your fingers expect them to be. Make sure you adjust the dioptre focus properly or you will have a harder time adjusting the main focus tube. I found the main focus tube on mine too easy to turn and would have prefered a stiffer feel. A lens cap is supplied.The super IR feature works very well. It is not adjustable and is focused at the factory for longer distance, so at short ranges the brightened target will be out of the field of view. But at short ranges the normal IR illuminator, which is always on, is more than adequate. There is no protective lens cap for the super IR lens.The RCA output is a nice feature, and worked well with my camcorder. Actually what you get is a mini plugin jack attached via two inches of cable to a female RCA jack which is fine because it stores very easily in the case, and it is easily extendible with a regular RCA patch cable. The unit can be powered by an external 12 volt source, but they don't supply one.Apart from an old TLR camera this is the only thing I own that is made in Russia. It is well finished and has a rubberized military look and feel to it, very solid. It is not waterproof. The warranty is 2 years. The manual covers everything you need to know but only briefly, OK these things are easy to use. There is no schematic or parts list.Bottom line is I am impressed, which is why I bothered writing this review, something I don't normally do.

It's not a binocular, it's monocular

There is only one eyepiece to look through! Any 1st generation 4x50 scope surpasses this cmos based camera. I don't recommend it for any use. The only advantage is video output and external power supply input. Don't buy it.
