Birding Binoculars

The birds from Finding Nemo

Looking for binoculars and need help! What Nikon?

Im looking for binoculars for stargazing. I can not afford a German brand and have reduced from the Japanese .. I like Nikon and reduced 2 models .. Do not you know the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? I wonder how much price difference .. Nikon 10x50 ATB http://www.binoculars.com/binoculars/bird-watching-binoculars/10x50nikontrailblazeratb.cfm Nikon Trailblazer ATB 10x56 Monarch http://www.telescopes.com/10x56monarchatb.cfm Thanks

That is a very difficult decision. Both seem to be a great set of binoculars. However, the price / performance war comes down to price you are willing to pay $ 300 + 12 mm for the opening? can make a difference. In $ 149, in my humble opinion of the 10X50 should give many years of good service by 25% of what you would pay for the other pair. However, if you do not mind paying the money extra opening would be very nice. Do not add that much weight either, so you should be able to handle easily.

Pretty good actually

by K. Brown from Detroit, USA on 2010-07-28
These binoulars are primarily used by my wife. She Loves them and uses them for birding. They are a great bargain and provide a clear bright image. My personal feeling is that they are a little too big to be carrying around on bird walks or through the woods. I have a different pair of binoculars that are smaller and easier to focus....so these are good and especially for the price. The 8X40 is a good range for birding but I would opt for something that is smaller and can hang from around your neck. These are really too big to lug around fields. They would be good for sports games or use at home or in a cabin but not hiking around.

Good for birding

by M. Kempen from Freedom, WI USA on 2010-05-10
I bought these binoculars for birding, and they are working well for that purpose. The rubberized grips are easy to hold. The focus is easy to adjust quickly. The 8X is more helpful than 7x's, yet it does not magnify hand movement too much. These are lightweight enough not to be bothersome. I have not had problems with fogging or rain. Comes with neckstrap and soft-side carrying case.

missing something

by Debi Donis from Wake Forest, NC on 2010-04-26
Overall, these are good, but they don't have a zoom feature. We felt we couldn't be without zoom, so they were returned. You just can't beat Amazon for customer service.

A Christmas present for our grandchildern

We got these binoculars for our 12-year-old twin grandchildren for Christmas. They were a big hit. I checked them out beforehand, and found them of good quality, well worth their modest price.

Great binoculars; Look good, easy to use, good price.

by Rob Chambers from Palo Alto, CA USA on 2010-08-15
These produce a crystal-clear, bright image. They are well-made and look great. The form-factor is convenient, and I was glad to see that they would produce such a great picture but still be easily portable.I currently use them for a bit of good-natured spying on the boaters on the lake in front of my house, but eventually hope to use them for hunting, hiking, concerts, etc...

good value

by B. Curran from South Dakota on 2009-09-26
Sharp image, great price, better than other more expensive binocs I own. Handy size. Would get 5 stars but no provision for a neck strap.

compact Galileo

by Dew West from usa on 2009-09-13
I received the binoculars promptly . the instructions were precise and even better short. The product is easy to use and great for midrange use. Autofocus would have made them better but the price is definitely right. Would purchase again.

Comopact Binoculars

by K. Seago from Wichita, Kansas on 2009-08-28
I really like these binoculars. They are small in size, large in power. I have only used them for the theatre so far, but I was impressed with the quality. These are my first pair of binoculars, I wasn't sure what to get, but I read the reviews and decided based on the reviews of this product and my needs. I am very happy with my choice and recommend them.

Excellent travel bino

by L. Drake from Eugene, OR USA on 2009-07-17
I have owned the Galileo 8x22 compact binoculars for several years and have used them for bird watching and opera. I have been extremely happy with them. The image is sharp and clear, they have a nice field of view and are so light they fit in a jacket pocket. Sadly, they are also small enough as to be easily lost. I left mine in a theater and between the time some kind person picked them up and when I retrieved them from the lost and found they must have been dropped. They now show a double image and must be used as a monocular. Fortunately they are also very inexpensive and I will not hesitate to replace them with another pair. An excellent buy.

Steiner 7x50 Marine Binocular

Awesome Binoculars!

by Michael A. Bevan from MBevan on 2009-10-11
I'm not familiar with high end binoculars, I bought these to watch football games from our nose bleed seats. They have excellent clarity, it is amazing the small details you can see, and the fan you can see across the stadium. They seem very durable, everyone is very impressed that uses them. A great buy.

exceptional glass

by Wade C. Flake from on 2009-09-11
After doing some research about binoculars I went with this model because; .great for people who wear glasses (soft eyepiece) .great light gathering (still hunters will love this one) .high enough power to work well, not so high to cause shake .and o my gosh clear ! .it might be a little heavy for hikers .advise to also purchase a Lenspen to clean with .overall it's hard to believe the quality of the product for the price

All I can say is YES!!!

by Rhon Herndon from on 2009-04-29
I have owned other binocs before, but these binocs ROCK!! They are great for being on the boat, especially when the boat is bouncing around on the water. These binocs are not small "pocket sized"...you can hold them with one hand but you need to grip them rather well if you only use one hand. They are pretty wide, but the quality of the view is worth it. These are by far my favorite binocs, and I plan to keep these for the rest of my life.

binoculars for the price

by GF binoguy from Midwest on 2009-07-15
The Nikon Action 8X40 is the Binos that I recommend to people. The Bak4 prisms are sharp and rarely used on binos at this price point. I have expensive binos that are great but people are surprised when I show them the view through these. Have bought as gifts for family members over the years. GF

looks great, price outstanding, delivery quick

by Al A. Carrasco from on 2009-06-03
I purchased for football games and general outdoor use. I have not used them yet, but looking through the lenses at trees in a distance I can't believe how clear the picture is. Much clearer than from my naked eye! These are so clear and crisp that it makes me feel that I should start wearing glasses so I could improve my site and vision. Great Binoculars for Birding!

by DSK from Georgia on 2010-05-26
I received the Bushnell Natureview 8x40 Birder Combo yesterday. I am very pleased with my purchase. I enjoy bird-watching and this binocular is perfect for my needs. The 8x magnification is great for seeing the birds in my yard or on my feeders up close and in detail and with no distortion or "handshake" like the higher magnifications have. For the price the clarity of the Bushnell Natureview is unbelievable. The wider 40mm objective lens diameter allows for great bird-watching in the early morning hours and in the late evening. The deluxe strap is strong and well-made, the rubber exterior is comfortable for extensive holding and for absorbing shocks and repelling water, and the fold-down eyecups are great for those with glasses.Contents: The Bushnell Natureview 8x40 binocular, carrying case, four lens caps, lens cloth, deluxe neck strap, birdwatching CD, and field log book.Pros: Bushnell Natureview 8x40 has great clarity, light weight body, comfortable rubber armor, sturdy neck strap, and fold-down eyecups. Field log book is neat and provides a place to check off identified birds. Birdwatching CDCons: None so far! This was a great purchase. I would recommend this combo to anybody wanting to enter the world of birdwatching!

Good Binoculars for a tripod.

by Dukevimes from Humble, TX. on 2010-01-03
I wouldn't recomend these for a solitary hunter/naturalist with weight/bulk concerns; they are heavy. For everyone else, however, these are great binocs. Mine are mounted on a heavy duty tripod to make the view rock steady. I can see what type of fish they are catching off shore! They have a rubberized outside that makes them seem rugged, I don't know for sure- I hope never to drop them. On the whole, I would buy again if I had it to do over.

just okay

by Christopher A. Persyn from kentucky on 2009-11-03
I'm no expert, first time owner, just not that happy, shakes too much when held. Maybe they all do it. The mount for the stand broke very easily, would not buy again.

I am very pleased with these binoculars

by Rene Perez from Miami, FL on 2009-05-05
I own a pair of these 10-30x 60 zoom binoculars and they have served me well in many situations. At low light the huge 60MM lens gave me more than enough brightness at 10 power. Even when Ii zoom all the way up to 30 power, the lenses were large enough to give me adequate light, however I can only use the higher powers in the day time. The binoculars came with a tripod and adapter that I have found really useful for getting steady images at the higher 30x power. By attaching the binoculars to the tripod really is the way to go from 15x or 20x on up. Normally, I would have had to buy the tripod and adapter but they actually came with the binoculars. The clarity and brightness at 10x was really nice, but like every other zoom binocular I've used in this price range, there is an expected slight dimming of the image when I zoomed in higher powers. The binoculars also came with a real nice, padded case with zipper pockets. Even the neck strap was very well padded and made carrying these large binoculars much more comfortable after time. Over all, I am very pleased with these binoculars. The kit included everything I needed to enjoy them at any power and there was really nothing more required to use them anytime of the day or night. The value was truly unexpected

Not as expected

by SAMEH ODEH from on 2006-03-02
This Binocular is useful between 10-15x but after that the image quality will come done too much, also it has shaded exit pupil due to improper prism material, which in turns will decrease light coming inside, and since the coating is only fully the brightness will not be maximized, and after 20x hardly you can enjoy the image. Comparing with skymaster 10x-70 , I recommend the skymaster one which is lower in price higher in quality and it has multicoated lenses, and no shaded exit pupil, but not zoomed one .

Great for hiking

by B. Hudas from Zephyrhills, FL on 2009-06-03
Very light / good grip / clear view. I am pretty happy with the Predator Pro. I think the rain cover that is included could be better. it's just a piece of cloth that covers the eye cups, I thought caps would be better. Over all a good buy if your looking for a good travel binocular! -BONES-

Steiner 10X26 Predator Pro Binocular.

by J. Douglass Paul Jr. from NH USA on 2009-04-25
I am very happy with my Steiner binocular. They were exactly as described. They are small and light enough that they easily fit into my jacket or vest pocket. I got them for just that purpose. I walk daily and always carry them. They are rugged and well built. I love the double end cap feature. It makes them quickly available with out having to worry where you are going to put the caps with out loosing them. It also encourages you to use them which is good for the glasses too. Here in New Hampshire most of my walking is in the woods which take me past a beaver pond. There is nearly always something that I want to see close up and the Steiners do the job. I have other binoculars which are fine to carry in a vehicle or boat. In fact their weight and large size make them easier to stabilize, but they are not much fun to carry around. I do find that I have to use a tree or some fixed object to keep my Steiners still. I did expect that and find their good points far out weigh that, the only bad thing that I can say about them. It is going to be a factor with any small and light weight binocular. It is simply a trade off for the portability of them. I would highly recommend them if your need is a great pair of binoculars to carry with you wether it be hunting, birding, or just for fun.

Traveler

by Jim R. Arias from on 2009-04-24
Great optics and size for travel or to keep in you vehicle or to take with you hiking or biking. The only negative is, it would be nice to have larger sun blockers where you look through, this is one of Steiner's trademarks that separate them from the field.

steiner 10x26

by John M. Godden from on 2009-02-06
These are nice binos IF you can handle the very short eye relief of 10mm. I purchased these binos and they were not usable with that extremely short eye relief. Other than that one major flaw I was quite impressed with them. I was pleased to see that the the 'predator' optical coating doesn't change the apparent color of a scene.

Great set for watching animals.

by Nukedude from Everett, WA on 2008-12-08
Great little set of binoculars that have clear and crisp optics. Steiner uses a coating to increase the contrast in the reds and browns found in animals fur. I was able to see Bald Eagles sitting in trees very clearly. My only wish is that they made ones with a reticle in a cheaper model. Rubber armor is great, focus is easy and the optical quality is perfect. They include a nice carry case and a neoprene cover for the eye cups. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys watching animals or hunting. Work well for general use as well. 10x26 power in a very small package. I bought these due to the Steiner Safari working so well in the past.

Arguably the best 8x42 binoculars available at any price

by MJD in SM CA from West Coast USA on 2010-06-06
I have never written a product review before, but my expectations for these binoculars were so under estimated that I felt the need to write a few words. At a selling price of $200.00 I understood the possible quality limitations. However I foundEye relief to be absolutely excellent, especially for eye glass users.Image clarity and brightness are spot on, certainly in part because of the wide field of view.My shipped example was optically perfectly aligned for superb sharpness once focused. Kudos to Olympus producing for a very high quality compact sized product.

Best Value in Birding/Backpacking Binos

by James R. Barnett from Sonoma County, CA on 2009-11-07
The Olympus Magellan 8x42 EXPWP I a steal at the typical 50% of list price offered by many retailers. Here's what you get for under $200: Sharp and contrasty roof-prism binoculars with excellent quality optics. They are rubber armored and fully waterproofed, come with a strap, case and caps. Best of all, they are MADE IN JAPAN. Compared to the more expensive, less sharp, Nikon Monarchs which are made in China, these are a downright no-brainer. The next closest made-in-Japan binocular is the Canon 7x42 (non-IS) AWPs but these are almost $100 more. I've used mine for two years now, backpacking, birding, and even for occasional stargazing. I love 'em.

most bang for the buck

by Chuck I. from Yorba Linda, CA USA on 2008-06-27
I am not a binocular expert, just someone who wants a good product at a decent price. The image quality is totally acceptable in my opinion. The lense covers dont stay on though. I was set on either the Nikon Monarchs or Leupold Cascade 8x42's and then I looked at the Olympus. Similar features at almost half the price. I am completely pleased with this purchase.

Better for chartering

by Nibor from Savannah, GA USA on 2008-04-27
I bought these to replace my standard 7x50 bins which are normally recommended for sailors. But they were bulky to take in my luggage - these are much more convenient and so far work just fine - but haven't tried them out on rolling deck yet!

Best binocular for the price

by Mr. C from California on 2008-03-30
These Olympus Magellan EXPWP 8x42 binoculars are the best binoculars out there in this price range. I visited several stores and tried many models in the $200-300 range, including Nikon, Pentax, etc. This 8x42 model came highly recommended and are probably a better all around choice then the 10x42 model. I also did many hours of internet research, reading reviews, comparing features, etc. Several professional reviews say that to get a pair of binoculars that are noticeably better than these, you will probably have to spend at least $500.00+ for a German made pair. When people try my binoculars, the first thing they say is "WOW!". The image is that good - crisp and clear to the edges. I use them for sightseeing on vacations, at stadium sporting events, bird watching, etc. They are light and easy to hold and use. (Just don't forget to twist-out the eye cups first if you don't wear glasses.) While visiting my wife's family in the Caribbean, my father-in-law liked them so much that ended up giving him my pair. So now I am replacing them with Amazon (best price). If you can afford to spend this much on binoculars, get these and don't buy the less expensive, inferior binoculars. You will notice a big difference the second you look through them and they are well worth every dollar. Do your own research if you like, and try them out. I'm sure you will agree that these are the best value, with the most features in this price range. These are an excellent pair of binoculars. Cheers!

by Neeraj Vora from Boston, Massachusetts. on 2009-05-09
Steiner 7x50 Commander V Binocular is without a doubt the finest pair of binoculars that I have ever used. In Dark conditions, I compared them to my other pair of 7X50 and the difference was obvious. 5 stars!!!! no doubt they are expensive, but its worth the extra money, compared to other brands. Highly recommended. worth every penny...

World Class Binoculars - worth the extra money!

by funbear from on 2007-12-23
....I will highlight much of what I like about these binoculars, and some of the shortcomings. If some of what I write is not clear, please read my review of the Canon 10x42L binoculars, as it is a detailed explanation of binocular selection in general, and some of the terms I am using below. As many know, Steiner is a world class Binocular maker from Germany. They provide many militaries with binoculars, so they know optics well. Probably only Ziess and Leica have a stronger reputation, but they represent the zenith of pricing also. The packaging of this product was the nicest I have ever seen. The box was very professional, the storage pouch was well made, and the binocs come with a 30 year lmtd. warranty. Here is what I like about 7x50 binocs in general, then, I will comment on the specifics of these Steiners...1) Very hand-holdable if you have relatively steady hands. 7x magnification IMO is the highest magnification you can acheive with relatively steady images. After 7x, for the average person, I would reccomend IS (Image Stabilization system) or Tripod / Monopod, unless you have a high tolerance for shaking images. The weight is only 30 oz. (just under 2 lbs) without the compass.2) 7mm exit pupil Diam. Although during daylight hours, much of this exit pupil is wasted, so the binocs appear no brighter than the 10x42's. However, when the light level becomes low, the difference in apparent brightness is HUGE. (assuming your eye pupils can dilate open wide enough to benefit from this, see chart above) This is also called the twilight factor. However, even during daytime use, these large exit pupils do not got to waste, as they provide tremendous "ease" of viewing as the circle of light bathing your small eye pupil allows you more "eye placement leeway" AND, it also allows your eyes to swivel inside this large exit pupil diam., which is a very natural feeling. With the Canon 10x42's, you must keep your eyes centered, and move the binocs to keep the subject of interest in the center of the image circle, to avoid the annoying black-out condition, caused by the exit pupil from the eye lens missing your eye pupil opening. This is a VERY underestimated value of large exit pupil binocs. (again, exit pupil is objective diam., / magnification, so 50/7 = 7mm.) This issue is somewhat age related. If you want to understand this further, read my explanation of exit pupil diameter under my Amazon review of the Canon 10x42L binocs. If you are an older person, and your eye pupils do not dilate past 4mm, then you are wasting a lot of exit pupil diameter and can probably use the smaller Steiner 7x30's and get equal results in a lighter, and smaller binoc.3) Astronomy use - 7x50's see a wide field of view. For astronomy use, the large exit pupil of the 7x50's is immediately apparent with producing very bright stars, and the ability to hand-hold, WITHOUT so much shake. With too much shake, the stars would appear like bouncing specs of lights. The difference between 7x and 10x is huge when hand holding. At 8x, I still find it hard to handhold for astronomy. Hence the value of 7x. It's best to "try" these variables out with the proposed binocs in your hands, because not only does everyone have different "hand stillness", we also have different tolerance levels for shaky images.4) Eye Relief. Most 7x50 binocs have longer ER, which maybe very desirable for those who wear corrective eyeglasses. Those with astigmatisms would benefit greatly by using their corrective eyeglasses when using binocs. As most binocs with diopter correction can correct for refractive differences between the eyes, but no visual optics can compensate for astigmatism, except your custom made corrective eyeglasses. Of course, if you wear contacts, you eliminate these problems. These Binocs are very eyeglass friendly. Now, specifics about the Steiner Commander V which I like.....1) Image quality is superb. I would rank them as high as the Canon 10x42L's which is about the sharpest binocs I have ever seen. Steiners web site boasts HD technology (High Definition) utilized in the design.... I have no reason to doubt their buzzword, as the image is super sharp with NO distortion. They also boast a 96% light throughput, which I have no way of testing, but have no reason to doubt their claim. Distortion is practically non existent.2) Eye cups are superb, they are perfectly designed to rid side light. If you wear your glasses, you can fold the side part of the cups back.3) Focus is done by each individually. Normally a nuisance, but Steiner has included a set of scales, so you can set the binocs at infinity focus, then lift and set the marker, for easy return to infinity setting after you had focussed close, or someone else used the binocs and changed focus. Brilliant feature.4) Rugged build. Steiner knows how to build rugged binocs, these are no exception. Nice rubber feel, great in cold or hot weather, as they the surface temp does not vary greatly.5) Lens caps are very use friendly....the snap into place, and can be easily removed, but yet remain captive on the binocs, making them easy to reinsert. The eye lens caps are the best I have ever seen design. They fit snug, regardless of the last IPD setting. They attach to the neck strap for easy return. You must flap over the side lips on the eye cups to use the caps.6) Focus has very fine adjust. Provides leeway for good focus.7) Excellent collimation - Steiner has had years of experience to perfect good collimation. It is part of the reason you pay more for their quality. To learn more about how to test for collimation and its effects, read my Canon 10x42L review.8) Matched fl's. Steiner seemed to pay a lot of attention to assuring the fl's of each optical train, for each eye, are matched in magnification... .this is another very high-end feature which is often not a concern in lower priced binocs, sometimes creating mis matched magnification in each eye, creating a condition called retinal rivalry, i.e. the brain is battling two different sized images, which creates mental stress. Often these subtle differences create eye strain as well. If the problem is extreme, you can see this in the blink test as explained in the Canon 10x42 review. I will have to assume Steiners QC is too good to allow shortcomings such as this.8) From the Steiner web site... some other great features.... Guaranteed shock-resistant and absolutely mil spec waterproof (tested to a submersion depth of 5 meters). The rubber armoring offers a good grip, protects the binocular and prevents slipping on wet surfaces. The optional flotation strap will keep the Commander V safely afloat. The nitrogen pressure system completely eliminates inner fogging from - 40 °C to + 80 °C. And the intelligent prism suspension with a carriage made of special silicon will keep your vision completely aligned. Some things I don't like, or would like to see improved....1) AFOV - Steinder does not list the AFOV. If I had to guess, I would suspect about 50 degrees. I would not call this a shortcoming because I have never seen any wide angle binocs with wider AFOV. But if you like big image circles for that WOW effect, you will notice a big difference between these Steiners and the Canon 10x42L's 65 deg AFOV. Canon clearly advertises this, and they should.2) Focus - Steiner did a nice job with the dual focus arrangement.... however, I still prefer a center focus that focuses both sides, used in conjunction with a Diopter adjust for one eye. This allows for fast focusing on the fly. Of course, if you remain focused at infinity most of the time, this is not an issue.3) Slight edge softness, but only at the very extreme edges, so not a huge deal, but slightly noticeable if you have sharp vision.Well, can't find too many shortcomings, these binocs are that well made....Bottom line.... if I had to choose ONE pair of binocs for hand-holding, it would be a toss up between the Canon 10x42's and these Steiner Commander V's. It comes down to the application.... for daylight use only, the Canons win for their larger AFOV (assuming you can afford the extra $ and can handle the weight), for mixed use (bright day and twilight) the 7x50's Steiners would win by a hair, and if it was for mid day and / or twilight use, combined with star gazing, the 7x50's would SURELY win.Binocs are highly personalized visual instruments. It's important to understand the variables so you can choose the right binocular size first, i.e. magnification and objective size, then choose the quality of the binocs. within this size. The old adage, Horses for Courses, certainly applies in binoc selection :-)Hope this helps with your buying decision....
