Night Owl Vision

A binocular night owl is a good buy?

Sure. I like too.

Owl night vision and vision of the night sky?

Owls have excellent night vision. Have you conducted any research on how well you can see the night sky? Are you able to see many times the number of stars that humans can?

Owls do not have super zoom capability, which has a very good vision, but they just have a large number of rods in the retina of their eyes, this allows them to use the stars to collect the light of night vision beaten. Something good is that nocturnal animals when you see their eyes shining in the night that is the color you see at night. So if you see an owl and his eyes are bright yellow, then that is the color vision Using night. The owls are based more on his ear then anything and then comes the vision into reality to locate their prey.

A lot of fun.

by Gator from on 2010-07-02
I bought this as a gift for my father and have been fortunate enough to enjoy it as well. The image is good, the double focus is good, and the battery life seems fine. I don't see a lot of practical use for this monocular, however it is a lot of fun to play with. An entry level device, decent enough grip, with room to improve the illuminator. Overall I'm pleased with this purchase.

I bought these for my wife for Christmas. She would have preferred binoculars but they were much more expensive. She is very happy with this item. Easy to use and fun.

worth the money

by Christopher S. Kelly from Cape Cod, MA USA on 2010-05-25
I was blown away at the hundreds of yards of view with these night vision binoculars! Unmatched, as I also own night vision monocular or single sight IR which can barely see 10 feet! I live next to a very large cranberry bog and watched a cayote, at 300 yards in complete darkness, walk along the far bank. Amazing

from cynical to pretty satisfied and impressed

by J. Ewing from United States on 2010-06-18
My first exposure to night vision was the starlight scopes in the early 1970s. This is a way better technoology. I have seen second and third generation devices some of which were pretty nice. This helps me to have a realistic perspective. This particular device has settings that enable you to optimize viewing for your situation. There is a gain control and an exposure setting. With the gain down a bit there is a sharper picture. When you crank down the exposure to 2 or 5 frames per second you can generally crank down the gain and see pretty well without the IR illuminator. You actually get an excellent signal to noise ratio that provides some fairly sharp pictures. I was able to get a picture of some cows about a quarter mile away on a cloudy night with the 1/4 moon just setting. They were too far away to recognize in the picture unless you knew what the scene looked like in daylight. But, then again the cows are pretty far away in the daytime. When you slow down the exposure rate it is impossible to hand hold effectively unless you are braced against something solid. I would recommend a tripod for the darkest conditions. The IR illuminator works pretty well at a pretty good distance compared to other scopes. I really like the lack of distortion and the ability to tune the picture to existing conditions. The addition of a neck strap would be nice to free up your hands. I would say that this device clearly outperforms any other in its price range and many 2nd generation units that cost a lot more. I particularly like the lack of distortion and image blemishes and decreased picture noise and the lack of light blooms and sensitivity of the device to bright light. Summary; This is a lot better than I expected as soon as I realized what the gain and exposure settings could do.

NV MONOC review

by Longshank from Maine/usa on 2010-03-25
Well i DO like this device AS it does not use the old Russian intensifier tubes ....& so has a clear bright image. This Night Owl does a great job.....& is one the best NV monoc out there for the money YET It is not without fault My gripe is that there is no neck strap....or any attachment points for a neck strap. This one oversight really is tragic, as it cripples your ability to employ this device to it's maximum effectiveness. The manufacturer's intent is for you to carry it in the case on your belt & UNZIP it as needed ....well the sound of that zipper opening would wake up the dead....scaring away whatever you were hoping to get a look at or possibly photograph. NV must be able to be deployed swiftly & silently & for monocs or binocs a neck strap is a MUST have. I took the liberty of attaching my own neck strap & no....it was not easy BUT now i have a usable device whereas before, despite it being a quality device...was nearly useless. i find it hard to recommend this unit...as most will not go to the trouble of attaching a neck strap. But if your just a casual "nite owl" then this might be perfect for you. So....yes it works great but the overall concept is not for those interested in a device for hard core "night ops"....but is more for those who want to stroll out into their backyard at night & take pics of deer or raccoons. Also...i would not take this unit out in the rain as it is NOT water resistant....the battery compartment is it's weak point in that respect. Which reminds me...the battery compartment door is not hinged to the main unit.....so if it were to pop off in the field at nite....you may lose it & then really be in a pickle. so i gave this device a 4 star rating because of it's advanced imaging system, & image capturing ability. it IS a great bargain but you must keep in mind it's limitations imposed by the design deficiencies.

Night owl iGen 20/20 ic 3x

by Joe E. Perez from Phoenix, Arizona USA on 2010-03-24
I purchased this used iGen monocular thru Amazon based on other reviews elsewhere. It arrived on time and was as good as advertised. Purchase price was $316 including shipping so I think this was a great deal I had to jump on. I tested every operation of it right away and it all worked great including video play and recording on my pocket video camera with video input. Since the advertisement for it did not state that every thing on it worked properly I was happy it did. Because of its shape you have to get used to handling it with both hands. My backyard has dark corners and this baby lit it all up with full clarity. It was very easy to work thru all items in the menu to adjust it to my preferred settings. Has a nice case that you can stap on your belt and the manual is very good as well. The image capture photos are in black and white only and though not as good as a regular camera still quite good for night vision scenes. You have to remember before buying that it can be used in day light with the cap on though it is primarily a night vision device and does best in that capacity. I got this for night use only and it works much better than my two other night vision binoculars purchased years ago with older generation systems and made in Russia. I highly recommend the Igen 20/20 ic 3x, especially if you can get a deal like I did! Used but in like new condition.

Beware this thing have no zoom!!!!

by Luis Felipe Gonzalez Diaz from Planet Earth on 2009-06-27
Ok my mistake.... the seller never claim that this device actually have a zoom feature, but I was mislead by the part where it claim that it does have 4X optics but anyway. Putting that aside the Night Vision feature does work properly. I give it one star just because I think that at this price it should have a zoom. You can find cheaper devices with pretty good zoom. If you don't need or want a zoom monocular this should be fine for you.

False Advertising!

by Pat Zottola from Mahopac, NY USA on 2010-08-29
The makers of this system, SVAT, Electronics, advertise it under the Defender brand name. On the Defender website, as well as Amazon, Sams Club, etc, this system is advertised as having a motion detection Email alert feature. I received this system last week and was able to easily setup every feature (web viewing, iPhone and Blackberry viewing, motion detection recording,) except for the Email alert feature. I called Defender support two times and sent an Email complaint, but each time the only response I got back was "We know about this issue and don't know when it will be fixed." If they know about this issue, why are they still advertising the feature??? If you don't need the EMail alerts then this is a pretty good system, but I really need the Email alerts to be aware when something is possibly happening at my home, so as far as I'm concerned this system is not worth it.

Not as advertised

Night Owl Explorer Marine Pro Blue 5x Waterproof Monocular USA

I have been looking for an affordable night vision scope for years, and I believe I have found it in the aptly named Night Owl Explorer. The well-thought-out design and powerful optics make this scope a pure pleasure to use. Since finding it, I have spent many nights standing on my back porch exploring with my eyes the area around my home. With the Night Owl, you will see an image as if you just looked through a regular optical device, except the image will appear in a monochrome green color. This little gem literally turns night into day: There is not an area in my yard that is not visible to me, even on the darkest of nights. It works like a powerful spotlight, directing a very bright beam visible only through the lens. The Night Owl fit my hand perfectly, and the deep blue rubber outer coating made for a nice look and feel, while also weatherproofing the unit. The handy strap held it tight to my palm, placing both the Power and the Illuminator buttons directly under my fingers for easy control. The care taken with the Night Owl extends to the smallest of details, including power management: Simply setting it down turns the power off so you will never accidently run the batteries down. --Dave Cole Pros Small and lightweight Ergonomic design Effectively turns night into day Water resistant Built-in Illuminator Cons No tripod mounting Separate focus for front and rear lenses Slightly soft focus at the edges of the field

The Night Owl Explorer Marine Pro night-vision scope gives you a premium performance tool that is engineered to higher than usual specifications. The two-piece body is coated in a "night blue" weather-resistant rubber, making this monocular ideal for hiking, fishing, nocturnal wildlife observations, and many other outdoor activities where you don't want to worry about the weather damaging your equipment. It can be used within a temperature range of -22 to 113 degrees F (-30 C to 45 degrees C). The high-grade objective lens has a focal length of 80mm and gives you a camera quality, 5x magnification level and superior optical resolution. When the sturdy construction and rubber-coated, 100-percent waterproof finish is combined with the ergonomic soft-touch control buttons and indicator lights, you get a high-quality monocular equipped with exceptional engineering advancements. Requires one 3V lithium battery to operate.

Features

  • Weather-resistant two-piece rubber-coated body; 100-percent waterproof for use in any weather condition
  • Has ergonomic soft-touch control buttons and indicator lights
  • Superior optical resolution
  • Range of view is 650 feet
  • Spectral sensitivity of 400-900nm (nanometers)

DON'T BUY, IT'S A PIECE OF CRAP

by Jaime Passy from on 2009-11-05
I was anticipating this night vision monocular to be great. I was really excited and anxious to get it. When I did, I almost puked with regret.First of all, it's heavy and bulky, absolutely not comfortable to carry around for a long time. Second, the viewfinder is so small, it seems you're watching through a straw, LITERALLY. Third, it's almost impossible to focus on something. The central focal point is so small that everything around it blurs drastically. Fourth, the minimum focal distance is about 6 feet, anything closer doesn't focus at all.Bottom line, paying $200 to look through a straw where everything is blurry sucks. The worst buy i've done in years (and I've shopped a bunch). Seriously, I've never written a bad review on anything because I didn't think it was worth it. There's always a first. PLEASE DON'T BUY, YOU'LL THANK ME LATER.

GREAT PRODUCT FOR THE MONEY!

by Michael A. Morgan from on 2009-09-21
Well, for the price, you cant really complain. The only problem I read in other reviews and found true myself was the battery issue. The battery does not fit, so in turn, it doesnt work. I had to rig it a little with wiring so the battery would fit inside and get a connection. Aside from that, the night vision is Gen1 and fine. I probably viewed approx 35 yards without IR. IR is a big help of course...though it can be visibly detected if you are using it ( for those that use it for Paintballing, airsoft etc). But without IR, i was able to see fairly well in at night. It will come in handy for my camping trips and other outdoor activites.

Weight?

Some Good, Lots Bad

by Erik R Gregory from Monterey, CA United States on 2007-11-06
The good--you can see fairly well in the dark at very close range. The bad--specs say 5x magnification...and it doesn't do anything like that. In fact, no zoom capability whatsoever. When I called Night Owl's support to ask about that, the support person had no idea what I was talking about. I phoned the next day and the next--the same person answered the phone every time and she knew NOTHING about the product! I wrote an email to Night Owl--no response. So this product DID NOT deliver (at least to me) what it promised in the specs and there is NO SUPPORT for it. Have returned and have no intention of going Night Owl again.

Great product for the money

by Rxdrug from on 2007-09-29
Personally I think this night vision scope performs great. The first night that I got it I tried it out, and I am pleased with the visibility range and clairty for the most part the unit produces. As someone else said, it has a bubble effect where it has a clear picture, but its alittle bit hazy/distorted on the outside edges (which dosnt make much of a difference at all. It works good with or without the IR illuminator activated (the IR illuminator gives better/brighter picture out past 150 feet, and makes reflective surfaces such as license plates and nocternal animal eyes light up). The unit on a night thats not cloudy and the moon is out can see the advertised distance (600-650 feet) well enough to pick out details in the terrain and people/animals walking around.Be advised that if you are looking for a night vision unit that can be used as an alternate to a flashlight, this is not the unit for you. Adjusting the two lenses (eye peice and main lense) is alittle tricky, espically if you plan on walking while doing so. The unit is also worthless for viewing anything closer then 10 feet. This night vision unit should be only used for viewing at a mid-range distance while standing still.

I love it, works good for money gen 1

by A. Benetoli from CT on 2007-10-26
I got one of this and I really love, its not the best one, you know, but for the price, I paid $91.00 used one. But it works very good out side, in closed area the bright light can really be unpleasant for your eyes. but you really can see in complete darkness so that is the point of the IR. I can see a clock against wall in my living room im complete darkness at 24 four feet. And the diopter has very good focus, very clear picture. This one is better than Yukon NVMT 4x50mm gen 1st (Mfr#24027) because I bought both and returned the Yukon.

Night Owl Optics

by Robert O. Brenner from Sunbury, OH USA on 2007-03-08
The Night Owl Optics monocular had a major flaw as soon as I started using it. The system uses high voltage derived from 2-AA bateries. Occationally the unit would create a large snap(arcing noise) and emit a bright flash of light from the eyepiece. If one is using the instrument, the light actually hurts the eye. I have returned the monocular to Night Owl for repairs. I do not know the result of the repairs as it is still in transit. They told me to ship it at my expense. Another strange requirement of the instrument is that the batteries are recommended to be removed if not used for 24 hours. Other than the above, the monocular has performed well. epilogue-Night Owl Optics did repair the unit and returned it.

Night Owl 3.1x

by Ismar Barouke from Arlington, VA, USA on 2007-01-15
Not bad, on the whole, for watching wildlife in the dark. Good illumination and nice balance between magnification, field of view, and use w/o a tripod. Sharpness falls off at the edges of the viewing area. I could recommend this to wildlife watchers who might be considering their first night-vision device. Since this was my first, I have no comparative information on whether there might be better ones out there.

It's really what they offer

Hello, I'm glad with this product, I haven't try it yet outside my house but in a really dark condition it works pretty well, I need to turn on the IR button and clearly I can read even a sign on a bottle in total darkness. this thing really works

Not useful

I bought this item over a year ago, and it has never served for anything. Once I spotted a deer and turned on the "IR" illuminator, and the deer ran away - not too surprising, it is actually a red light and totally visible for most animals. Better use a flashlight. This is a first-generation nightscope, and has a very small range of utility: If there is a little light, the adapted human eye sees better, and if there is almost no light the device does not see either. 100 bucks is not too much of a waste, but if you are serious about nightvision you should spend about 10 times as much.
