Leupold Quick Release Harness

by K. Ochiai from on 2009-11-02
I've never used the straps that come with binoculars, as they are only designed to prevent you from dropping your binoculars. Other than that, they constantly get in the way when you bend down, turn, or move, as the binoculars swing wildly about, banging against your body and solid obstacles that get in the way. They're only useful if you're standing still, and never move. For this reason, I've done without the straps, and just carried the binoculars with me. However, on a hiking trip, I soon discovered that holding the binoculars in one hand or using the standard strap just didn't cut it when climbing over obstacles, walking over slippery or uneven terrain, and many other situations that required having both hands free. The Leupold quick release harness goes on in seconds, and takes just a few more seconds to snap the binoculars in place. With the harness on, both hands are free, and the binoculars stay firmly in place when climbing, bending over, squatting down, and even crawling on all fours! Simple and ingenious design allows instant access to your binoculars with no binding or restriction of movement in total silence. If you need to remove the binoculars, it takes seconds to release the two quick release catches. I looked at other harnesses, but most of them used cheap metal rings that the quick release clips attached to, and were difficult to fit on to the binoculars without scratching or damaging the finish of the binoculars, not to mention the noise they would make when moving or walking. Others were semi-permanently attached to the binoculars. The Leupold harness uses a shoelace loop type of attachment to the binocular's existing strap mounts. This makes for a silent setup when you're in "surveillance" mode. And none of them had the classy Leupold logo on the leather "X" connector, letting others know you have a serious pair of binoculars with you. Amazon's price for the Leupold harness is only a few dollars more than the other harnesses I looked at, but I'm glad I went with the Leupold, due to the design flaws that would get old very quickly when using the other harnesses. And my Leupold Cascades deserved a quality harness to complement their performance.

This is an excellant product. I find that it is very comfortable and easy to use. It is far better than the straps that come with most binoculars.

Very happy with my purchase

by lynn from on 2010-08-24
I decided to purchase the Leupold Yosemite binoculars after having the opportunity of using them on a bird watching outing with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. They were really perfect for me ( size, weight, perfect eye adjustment & power) and just what I needed for the nature walks I organize back in Chile. When I checked the price I found very good value for money. I have just come back from an outing at one of our Parks in the Atacama Desert ( the desert is in flower this year!) and have definitely confirmed my first impression. These are the binoculars for me!

Awesome Binoculars!

by elizabeth swenson from on 2010-01-27
This pair of binoc's are just perfect for someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune but wants good quality and good viewing. If you're a serious birder or something you may want to invest more and get a pair that will give you bionic eyes. But for the everyday outdoorsman or woman, this is the pair for you! The seller delivered on time and the product was as described. A+ to both the seller and the product.

Great Value

by Steven G. Homolka from Minnesota on 2009-10-21
Was on a mission to find a good pair of binoculars for deer hunting and viewing other wildlife. My goal was to spend around a $100 which was difficult considering that some of the better binoculars sell for well over $1,000. I had viewed a dozen sets of binoculars at Cabela's priced as high as $300 and found that none of them compared to the Yosemite 8x30. Even if you think you need a 10X take a look at these. They are crystal clear compared to all the 10X binoculars I looked at. What good is the extra 2X if the image isn't as clear. Also had the best light gathering ability so hunting that last hour of the day was a pleasure. Saved about $40 purchasing from Amazon over retail stores.

I should have bought it from Amazon !

by Zen Master from New York City, USA on 2009-09-27
I bought it from Dick's Sporting Goods( $[...]+tax, Yak! )after I compared it with the other two more pricey models in store: Leupold Acadia 10x42 and Nikon Monarch 10x42. I can't "see" any difference in optical quality in the other two models with my naked eyes :-( And this one is lighter, wider field of view, and half price! Perfect for my deer hunting season.

Leupold Green Ring 10X42

by D. Hansen from on 2010-03-17
I wondered if I would find "the right binoculars for me" with so many to choose from in the Leupold Green Ring line-up, not to mention all the competitors binoculars. Well, after visiting a couple of the big hunting stores, and getting my hands on the different green rings and the competition in the same price range, I found that my two choices where the Leupold Mojave or Cascades. I relay love the center focus dial diopter! Easily adjust it, push it in and lock it in place, it stays where you adjusted it. Other people using my binoculars don't mess with the diopter setting as often. I liked the feel of the Mojave's best but went with the Cascades because I could not justify the $130.00 difference with a shrinking pay check. Other than the frames the specifications are the same. Some of the other brands had a slightly better Field of view, but the center diopter adjustment on the two Leupold's mentioned was worth the loss to me. Besides I've had great luck with Leupold Scopes and not such great luck with other brands.

great glasses

I love these binocs. I am taking them to Africa for a month. I like the compact size for traveling and they are extremely clear. Its an American company too.

very compact...

by A. Scott from on 2010-04-01
Just bought these the other day and tried them out a couple times so far. I bought them primarily for bird watching. They are smaller than I thought, but very good quality. They feel great in my hands and feel substantial. The marketing tag that they are compact, but deliver same quality and experience as a full size is 100% accurate. If you have frankenstein hands then you should go for a bigger pair, as they will simply be too small for comfort. I like the focus wheel a lot... it is very smooth. If you are looking for a mid-range priced bino that are compact & light with exceptional quality then you should snatch these up right away. They are practically perfect. I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 due to their size; the fact that they are so small may be a deal breaker for some. I would prefer them to be slightly larger, but really this is incidental and not a big deal for me.

great little binocs!

by Correne George from Watertown, MA on 2009-09-28
I was very impressed with these binoculars, using them on two recent trips. I mainly use binocs for birding and wildlife viewing and they were very reliable. The image is sharp and the focus was very sensitive. The adjustable eyecups took some getting used to, since I have never had binocs that did this before. But it didn't take long to also get used to that feature. The weight was very good, never giving you any neck aches. I also like the strap, it's super comfortable!! Also, the waterproof-ness of these was tested several times when I was caught in the rain with them and I can attest to it being true! These are perfect binocs for a birdwatcher (or some occassional people watching!)

In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place. During Leupold’s second half-century, the company focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold’s presence in the hunting and shooting market expanded with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry’s standards--nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more--were Leupold creations.

Great General Purpose Binoculars

by S. Coleman from Newark, OH on 2010-06-08
I recently purchased the Leupold Yosemite 8X30 black binoculars for general purpose use. Thses binoculars have exceeded all expectations. They are extremely clear, light weight, easy to focus, and well constructed. I took them to a golf tournament and they were wonderful at watching golfers hit from 200 to 300 yards away. You could easily identify the golfers. Unfortunately, I lost one of the individual objective lens caps at the golf tournamment. I emailed Leupold and they are sending me a replacement lens cap at no cost. Great customer service! For the price, quality, and general purpose use, these binoculars are hard to beat.

Great binoculars and they're light

by Dennis B. from San Diego, CA on 2010-02-24
I got these binoculars because they were light and easy to carry. When I used them I was amazed and pleased at how good they are. They are easy to adjust and the image quality is excellent. Although the objective lens is only 30mm, they are brighter than a cheap pair of 8x42 roof prism binoculars that I have. You won't be disappointed with these!

The factor that has the greatest impact on resolution or image detail, will be dependent upon the amount of light available during the time of observation. During daylight hours, when your eye pupil size will be only about 2 to 3mm, magnification will be the principal factor in image resolution. At night, with the eye pupil dilated to 6 to 8mm, aperture size is the controlling factor. In twilight conditions both of these factors control resolution effectiveness and the twilight factor is the term that compares binocular performance under these conditions. The twilight factor is calculated by taking the square root of the product of the magnification and the aperture. The higher the twilight factor, the better the resolution of the binocular when observing under dim light conditions. For example, a 10 X 40 (twilight factor 20) would effectively resolve better under these conditions than a 7 X 35 (twilight factor 15.4) even though the 10 X 40 has a smaller exit pupil. Remember, however, that the twilight factor does not take into account the transmittance or quality of the optical system.

This is what I was looking for in a binocular: clear bright image, reasonable price and not too heavy. I would have liked to have had a hard case and connected lens covers, but I am still satisfied with the purchase.

Amazing for the Money

by Doughnut Hole from MA on 2009-12-06
Purchased these a week ago, and haven't been able to put them down. They are shockingly similar in overall quality to a pair of 8x30 Swarovski SLC binoculars I used for several years but lost. Center sharpness and contrast are excellent, and even edge sharpness is very good- which is surprising for a binocular of this low price. The weatherproofing has already handled snow and rain, with no difficulties. Coatings on lenses and prisms seem to be excellent, given great low light performance, as well as almost no color distortion- even in difficult lighting conditions. (Just did early morning bird watching with some snow on the ground and the sun rising- no color distortion- even on edges of brightest, whitest areas.) The only improvement I can think of for these, at this price, is a wider field of view- but the 6.5 degrees is still totally acceptable- just not quite the 8 degrees plus I was used to from the Swarovski. But we'll let that slide because of the $700 savings!!!! Also, if you destroy these, you won't feel the need to purchase them a burial site. $250 isn't cheap for me, but it sure beats $950. As a side note, these binoculars can even handle direct viewing of bright lights at night, with very little flaring. This is a great test of lens coating and internal "baffling" to keep views clear. Also, the strap that comes with these is the best I have ever seen- it has a stretch fabric pad on it at the neck portion- which makes it as though you aren't even wearing them. I have read complaints about the lens caps in reviews on other sites, which say they fall off easily. I don't use caps when I carry them, so this isn't an issue. Also, the lenses are set back into the rubber armoured surround- so it would be challenging to find a way to scratch the lenses anyway. Also, no offense to Nikon, but I did a side by side of these and the 8x42 monarchs at a sporting goods store- the performance is similar, but the view through Leupolds is MUCH brighter. Great binoculars!

by James H. Cason from Tallahassee, FL on 2009-12-23
These are the best (and highest priced) binoculars I have ever owned. They are light and very easy to hold. They focus rapidly and with minimum effort. They are the first binoculars I could use easily with my glasses because they have great eye relief. I plan to keep them a long time, and I can't imagine how buying Leica binoculars for about $1000 more could be that much better.

Nice Binos

by beeswax from San Francisco, CA on 2009-03-21
These binoculars have exceeded my expectations. They just feel like quality and are a well thought out design. I cannot think of any thing I would change. Image quality is excellent and they are easy to focus. Good value for the money.

Superb quality at a fair price

by New England Yankee from Northern New England on 2008-09-18
Shopping recently for a pair of binoculars as a gift (all 8x42s), I tested approximately 2 dozen models between appx. $200 - $700, covering a dozen different major brands. I found a few that I would be quite happy with, but the standout was the Leupold Pinnacles. The selection process consisted of a close focus test, long-focus test with the emphasis on fine resolution, a side-by-side evaluation of brightness and edge-to-edge clarity, and an evaluation of build quality. As I worked through the models with my wife's assistance, we gradually worked down to 4 models, then 3, then 2, swapping models back and forth as we traded assessments. As you might suspect, differences between the last few were subtle, but what finally distinguished the Leupolds over the last close competitor was their ability to resolve fine detail at distance. These are bright, sharp binoculars with good ergonomics and at a very good price when compared to premium optics, against which they stack up quite well.Highly recommended.

With their incredibly wide range of interpupillary adjustment, Yosemite binoculars fit the faces of more people than most full-size binoculars, making them the ideal optic for anyone from youths to adults. The 6x magnification offers an ideal combination of power and wide field of view for tracking game on the move. This rugged, waterproof binocular is covered by the Leupold's limited lifetime warranty. Specifications: Magnification: 6x Linear field of view: 420 feet per 1000 yards/140 meters per 1000 meters Angular field of view: 8 degrees Objective aperture: 30mm Twilight factor: 13.4 Exit pupil: 5mm Eye relief: 20mm Interpupillary distance: 50 to 70mm Close focus distance: 16.4 feet/5 meters Weight: 17 ounces Length: 4.6 inches What is Twilight Factor?

Leupold Yosemite works great for me!

by J. curtiss from Seattle on 2010-08-23
Well first of all, I have never used binos, because they always were out of my viewing range. My eyes are wide set and I could never find a pair that fit right. My friend suggested Leupolds, and WOW what a difference. I can now see what I have been missing during my hunts.I definately suggest these binos for anyone wanting to improve sight, and early detection of animals, and or anything worth seeing better from a distance.John

Excellent travel binocular for everyone

by Tom Hannigan from on 2010-06-06
Got these as a travel pair and really glad that I went ahead with it. they are perfect for travel, especially if you don't like the weight of binocs dragging you down by the end of the day. These weigh in at 17 oz, which is nearly a 1/3 pound lighter than a good pair of roofs. Very Bright image and a wide field of view. Even though I wasn't sure if I needed these guys, I've kept them. The image sharpness is excellent on axis, and very good right out to the edge. I had read reports that they dropped off dramatically at 50 to 60% out, and I either have a unique pair (which I doubt), or they did (which I think is true). Really not likely that I could have such a good pair as an exception to the rule. More likely the other way around. These are also waterproof.Yes, they are advertised for kids and beginners, but I don't think Leupold stated this to give them an excuse for poor workmanship. These are solid, well balanced, and have the feel of quality. They are small and they are light, and the object here is that they provide a pleasing image that won't shake because the binoculars are too heavy. Therefore, great for kids ( of upper middle class families, I suppose, because the price point for a 10 year old with only a passing interest in birds is rather steep), and old duffers like me who want light weight and quality. I suppose they think we can only hold binoculars with one hand because we use the other to hang onto a tree so we don't fall down, or because we have not taken our anti-shaking medication. It is with that thought in mind that I believe they left out very tiny and timid eentsie beenstsie women of all ages.

Great Binoculars

by Harold V. Williams, Jr. from on 2009-12-05
I had decided to purchase a new, larger pair of binoculars for hunting (I had been using compacts), and after having heard of some endorsements by people who have a lot more experience with optics than I do, I decided to try a pair. The price was such that if they did not perform as I had heard they would, then I really wouldn't have lost much money, as they were priced well withing my budget. After receiving the binoculars, and using them in the field for a couple of weeks, I was impressed by how well they did work. They certainly perform beyond their price, and do a much better job than the compacts they replaced, especially in low light.

great for the price

by J. Lucas from Kenosha, Wi USA on 2009-10-11
These are very good binoculars for the price. I did a lot of research on these before my purchase and I am very happy with my purchase. Great for bird watching. The only fault I could find with these is when you turn the focus knob you can hear the what sounds like grease in side of them. Other than that I love them.

Great binoculars. Incredible price

by Emilio J. Del Toro from East Windsor, NJ USA on 2008-05-19
These got to be easily the best binocular of all time for young users and probably the best binoculars under $[...]. Can easily put a good fight against $[...]binoculars. Clear and flat view, superb optics, lightweight, waterproof/fogproof, solid construction and are backed by Leupold's great warranty. I never imagined that the view at 6X would have such a nice "pop" and 3D feeling. Somebody over birdforum.net wrote that with the Yosemites you get $[...] worth of view for under $[...] and he's not really far off. I compared them to my Nikon Monarch 8X42 (a great binocular with a reputation of being a bargain at $[...]) and the Yosemites more than held its own, matching image quality and losing only on the ease of focusing and close focus ability. I got these for my 9 year old son (red model) and he loves them. He can use them with ease and can hold them steady thanks to the lightweight/low power combination.
