Good Night Vision Monocular

by D. Michael Sanford from on 2010-07-13
I wanted a good night vision monocular to check out the woods behind the house at night since I hear all kinds of sounds but never see anything. The usable visible accuracy of these monoculars are less than 50 yards, so if your looking for a real clear N/V scope these aren't the ones you want. Even at 50 yards, the acuity is not that great although you can make out whether or not your looking at a human or a deer. This monocular is the first generation (the 1+), when you step up to 2nd, or 3rd and 4th generation, the price increases accordingly. I doubt that most people would need a 3 or 4th generation unit, in fact, the US forces rarely use 4th generation, they mostly use the 3rd. The battery usage is minimal but I would go and buy a box of batteries to have in stock. They are not batteries that can be found easily unless you go to Radio Shack or a similar store to buy them. I'm very satisfied with this N/V scope. The covering is water proof as well as the controls. It is not heavy but it is not something you can put in your pocket to carry. It does come with a neck strap. I also has a auto power off to save the battery.

Works well for basic night vision

by M. Taylor from United States on 2010-02-12
The first unit that was shipped to me did not work at all. I returned it to ATN and they shipped me a new unit as soon as they came back in stock. The second unit works fine, the image you get is a greenish glow and we use it to spy on furry little creatures that congregate in our backyard at night. It does not have a great range, so don't expect it to "bring" images closer to you, at least not very much. For the price, it works well. I recommend it to anyone wanting a basic night vision unit.

Bushnell Night Vision products feature a built-in infrared illuminator for enhanced images in very low light for use when camping, exploring caves, patrolling warehouses or other locations where there is no ambient light to amplify. Backed by a 2-year limited warranty, the Bushnell line-up of night vision equipment is lightweight, compact and ready to use for work or for play.

Designed to fit in the palm of your hand, the Bushnell 2.5 x 42 Night Vision Monocular features a built-in dual-power infrared illuminator that works in total darkness and low-light conditions. In total darkness, the monocular sends out an imperceptible ambient infrared beam that allows you to observe objects with no other light source. The low-beam intensity can be used when partial light is available. Offering outstanding viewing clarity and versatility, the 2.5 x 42 monocular allows you to see in the dark without being seen and alerting others to your presence as with a flashlight. Ideal for hunting, scouting games, and security and surveillance, the monocular is lightweight and easy to hold with its included hand strap. The monocular is also equipped with a tripod mount. With a viewing range of four to 600 feet and a field of view of 79 feet at 1,000 yards, the monocular has plenty of power to illuminate the night. The monocular is water resistant and comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Can't beat this one $ + !

by Stonington from WILBRAHAM, MA, US on 2010-09-05
When considering night vision for any reason I needed to consider a few things and cost was a big factor. For casual viewing in the yard and / or star viewing I have found this unit is surprisingly good, for the cost it operates just fine and is better then I expected, much better. Another thing I considered was the battery replacement and this one is easy as can be, no exotic power cells that can only be found on-line just 2 plain old "AA" and it's up and running for a long time. So far I have hour after hour after hour on the same two batteries I started with. (removing them when not in use) Most other units I looked at were not so friendly in this area, many require batteries you'll never find in the neighborhood CVS or supermarket; that is a large factor to be considered, what will you do when you can't find batteries anywhere except on-line and end up waiting for 10 days to get them, that takes the fun out of it fast. All in all this has surpassed all my expectations and I can even take respectable digital photos through the lens with surprising results. It takes some patience to do but it works well and produces fairly good images. Someone in the yard at night..., an animal perhaps? This will to get the image, it'll take a bit of practice and the right camera but I found this one works just fine. So far all around I'm very pleased with this purchase and I do recommend it unless you need a higher end unit but for the average Joe for casual applications this is smart purchase for a low cost.

Good unit for 1st generation, but ...

by L. Leuzinger from Pantanal, Brazil on 2010-08-07
Being a first generation scope this is a good one, the IR beam has a good range of about 50 yards. But anyone will see you because the IR lamp is strong and glows red. Things are only sharp in the center of the image, but they look clear and you can identify easily anything up to 50 yards.I bought this to watch wildlife, but honestly a good flahlight will be as good or even better because you'll see it in color. My problem wit it is that I was using a military grade scope prior to this and any comparision is unfair ...

Excellent

by JS Bird from South Africa on 2010-06-05
I am using this Bushnell night vision monocular for security purposes and when my backyard motion sensors (I have a large yard) inform me of abnormal movement. I am now able to experience excellent night vision when I do my own security surveillance from the comfort of my bedroom window. I am not giving it 5 stars as I would imagine the more expensive (military) types should earn all the stars. I am a happy user.

Good Gen 1 device

by Matthew J. Woerly from on 2010-05-19
This product is about as good as you can expect for the price and being a Gen 1 device. It's larger than I expected, a little larger than a small camcorder. It needs a little bit of light to function well. If your eyes adjust to the dark, what you can begin to see, this device brightens up a good bit. What is still too dark is also too dark for the device. It's good at showing detail in dim scenes. It's also good in places where there may be a bright area (where you can see) right next to a dark area. Your eyes have a hard time adjusting to the dark area with bright lights near it. This device allows you to look into the shadows and dark areas and see things your normally can't (of course, don't point it at the bright lights...) The manual says you shouldn't point it at anything brighter than 1 lux for very long. That's about a full moon, maybe a little brighter. The IR light works well out to maybe 50 to 100 feet. It's pretty bright on closer objects. Much further out it doesn't help much. As mentioned in other reviews, it's also really bright if you're looking right at it. If you put something in front of it, you can see the red light shining on it for about a foot. I've considered getting a filter for it, but am not really sure where to look. Some people suggested using primary red and congo blue stage lighting gels, I may do that eventually. I tried a floppy disk, and it helped, but it also made the IR light a lot dimmer for the night vision. Once focused, the image on the device is very sharp. It's distorted around the edges as with any Gen 1 device, but provides a very clear image in the center. I think the 2.5x is a good balance for providing a good angle of view but some magnification also. It's not great for things closer than 20 feet or so, or things over about 200 feet away. When I first turn it on, there are some bright flashes and such as the manual says may happen, but those disappear quickly. The image also kind of flickers, flashing a bit brighter sporadically. Not sure if that's normal, but it's not really that big of a problem. Especially in really dark places (where it's not much good anyway), and also a bit in brighter places, you can see what looks like static in the image. After you turn it off, the image remains for a few minutes before fading away. I found that once you turn it off, the image quality is actually better at first. The static clears up and you get a pretty clear image. The battery compartment can be tight. I have some normal alkalines that went in fine, but I have some rechargeables that are a bit larger that got a bit stuck in there. I was able to line it up on a chair with my DSLR camera and got some decent shots (a little blurry from movement and static), though it's really hard to point it where you want it and have it stay still in the right place. I needed about 10 seconds to get enough light for a good exposure at ISO 1600. It's no high end device but it's still functional and fun to play with. I hope to get some good time using it this summer.

Description

The new Stealthview¿ Digital Night Vision products use a powerful infrared spotlight to produce images with resolution rivaling that of Generation 2 and 3 optics. The view is sharp from edge to edge, and they're effective in complete darkness and at long distances. They're also invisible to game animals and observers.

Bushnell has engineered the Nightwatch 2x24 with Built-In Infrared Monocular to produce images with resolution that rivals costly Generation 2 and 3 optics. Using a powerful infrared spotlight that produces sharp images even in pitch darkness, the Stealthview monocular is ideal for a wide variety of applications including security and surveillance, camping, night fishing, navigation, and wildlife observation. This powerful infrared technology works by providing a light source for the Nightwatch system to amplify and collect through an objective lens. This collected light is then processed through an image sensor to produce a high-quality image that is magnified at 2x. Designed for use in a variety of terrains, the lightweight Nightwatch monocular features a built-in tripod mount and rugged rubber armor around an ergonomically shaped body for added comfort during prolonged use. The Nightwatch monocular operates on two AA batteries and provides a viewing range of up to 700 feet, making it the perfect nightvision monocular for nighttime adventures. Perfect for night viewing

by J. Deshields from on 2010-04-13
I did not think that this binocular would be a good deal for the money. I really thought it would be like a childs toy or just plain useless. I WAS WRONG!!!! I love my Bushnell Night Watch 2X24 w/Built in Infrared Binocular. There are woods behind my home and my binocular seems to work the darker it is the better the view. It's great to see all of the 4 legged night creatures and the 2 legged "human rats" that might be roaming the woods at night.Bushnell Night Watch 2x24 w/Built in Infrared Binocular

just some info on nvg's before you buy one

by mijo556 from on 2009-11-05
to the customer who purchased this product and stated that in a dark room, he couldn't see anything, night vision devices aren't made to let you see anything in a dark room without the aid of infra-red. yes, with the infra-red on you were able to see, but thats only because the infra-red is there for use only in poor lighting situations. on a clear night outside with the moon out and plenty of starlight, visibility is pretty good. on a cloudy night, no moon or starlight, visibility with night vision goggles isn't as good anymore. what they're designed to do is amplify the ambient light that is given off by the moon or the stars. indoors with no light source, you wont be able to see anything without using the I.R. mode.also, most civilian model night vision devices use older generation tubes, so the image probably isnt as good as it would be with newer generation tubes. if anyone would like to read more, this is the link that goes more in depth about night vision devices[...]i had to give a rating to post this, so i just went with the 3 stars to say its ok.

good product. does what it says.

by Paul E from Jersey on 2009-07-21
the Bushnell night watch is a good toy, but nothing for serious use.In a dark room I couldn't see anything at all with out the IR light on. No shapes, no outlines, nothing. With the IR light on I could see pretty well in the dark. Focus is not perfectly clear, but adequate. The objective is pretty small, but I can read the label on a cereal box in complete darkness from about 25 feet away. From farther I can make out shapes and outlines. It wasn't exactly a waste of money, but it isn't as fun or useful as I thought it would be, and in hindsight I don't think I'd buy it again.

Fun Binocular

by V. Stenger from on 2009-06-30
Got this for a Fathers Day gift, he loves it!! Of course I had to take it out of the package and try it before we gave it to him, it was just as described. We could see in total darkness, the viewing field is somewhat small up close but it is sufficient to play around with. I could see my dog who was running down the yard, (about 300 or more feet)in total darkness. It is a fun binocular. My dad wanted one to see the wildlife at night at his home.

OK for the price.

by Alex Forrester from on 2010-04-01
Good: -Resolution is good, the gen 1+ tube gives twice the resolution of many competing brands and focus is pretty sharp for a 1st gen. -Excellent optics. -The unit is quite sensitive, neighbors' porch lights are enough to illuminate their entire yard in most cases - less if they are using compact fluorescent bulbs (less IR emitted). I spotted a black lab puppy in my neighbor's yard from 1/4 mile. That's impressive for a 1st gen. -This is actually a 1st+ gen tube and you notice significant reductions in light blooms and distortion - even in the periphery. Combined, they make the image much more useful. -Available attachments - esp. the camera attachment and lens doubler - make the unit expandable.Bad: -First unit quit after 4 days!!! -The built-in IR illuminator is almost worthless - .1 watts according to the company. You can buy an add-on for ~$100 but it's only .45 watts. By contrast you can make your own 3 watt illuminator for under $30. -Contrast needs to be higher; it often feels like you're looking through fog. Contrast is better on my cheaper Bushnell. -Brighter conditions revealed many irregularities in the tube, making the image appear speckled. -There is a design flaw in the placement of the proximity sensor. A finger will usually get close enough to make the unit say on when carrying it. This happened with all 6 people who used it.Overall: Price makes this unit one of the best 1st gen NV devices on the market. The device feels sturdy (even though mine broke) and all buttons and adjustments worked fine. I'd love to see more contrast and fewer irregularities in the tube. BUY THIS THROUGH AMAZON! Great price and no hassle with the exchange.

Fine Instrument

by Wildlife Gazer from Ohio on 2009-08-23
The scope is outstanding and definitely exceeds my expectations. Once you familiarize yourself with its' capabilities you realize it is in a class of its' own. Since it is a "fine instrument" I felt that it needed a custom case padded with thick foam to protect it. I have enjoyed it and will continue for my lifetime.
